Vetinari from Discworld, in Going Postal:

'…sometimes, very rarely, at a point in a man’s career where he has made such a foul and tangled mess of his life that death appears to be the only sensible option, an angel appears to him, or, I should say, unto him, and offers him a chance to go back to the moment when it all went wrong, and this time do it right. Mr Lipwig, I should like you to think of me as…an angel.'

I was just getting over my crush on him from a previous book. This quote made me fall in love with him all over again <3

Vetinari. Seriously the best. I think as a secondary character, he's wonderful, because his scenes are sparing, but always amusing.

(I was honestly surprised at how much I loved Going Postal. It's now my favourite Discworld book - apart from Hogfather, which I read every Christmas.)

Not just amusing - he's so clever, it's a privilege to watch his magnificent bastard-ry at work. I would actually adore a book that focused on Vetinari, although maybe from someone else's POV, like Drumknott's. ofc it's not very plausible anymore, but I can dream. Quite literally too, I do remember a dream where I read that. It took place in Uberwald and made me cry with how great it was. /wistful sigh
