One Great Quote from your favorite characters

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Take a fictional character you really like. Post just one awesome quote they once said. It doesn't have to be your favorite line, just a really awesome one. If you want to, explain the context that makes the line great. Dialogue exchanges are okay too.

Do this for as many characters as you want!

The Doctor: Nobody important? Blimey, that's amazing. You know that in nine hundred years of time and space and I've never met anybody who wasn't important before.

I don't even like Christmas Carol all that much, but that quote just sums up Eleven for me and many of the things I love Doctor Who.

...And I just read that you only asked for one, and I gave you more than one. Sorry! I swear I know how to count... |D

From Night Watch by Terry Pratchett:

"He wanted to go home. He wanted it so much that he trembled at the thought. But if the price of that was selling good men to the night, if the price was filling those graves, if the price was not fighting with every trick he knew....Then it was too high. History finds a way? Well, it would have to come up with something good, because it was up against Sam Vimes now."

-Narration/Sam Vimes POV

---
“I joined the fight. I snatched up a lilac bloom from a fallen man and, I have to say, held it in my mouth. I'd like to think I made some difference; I certainly killed four men, although I take no particular pride in that. They were thugs, bullies. No real skill.

- The Vetinari

---

"I repeat, I order you to dismantle this barricade." [Vimes] took a deep breath and went on. "And rebuild it on the other side of the corner with Cable Street! And put up another one at the top of Sheer Street! Properly built! Good grief, you don't just pile stuff up, for god's sake! A barricade is something you construct!"

- Sam Vimes

---
Vimes: Really? And perhaps some sort of inspiring slogan?
Vetinari: Yes, indeed. Something like, perhaps, 'They Did the Job they Had to Do'?
Vimes: No. How dare you? How dare you! At this time! In this place! They did the job they didn't have to do, and they died doing it, and you can't give them anything.
(I just listened to the audio book, so I have it/Discworld on the brain, sorry)

---

From The Hogfather

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

---

And then if narration counts, this quote from Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett:

If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.

Maybe we can organize by fandom? Here's one of mine:

LEO
Because I'm tired of it, year after year after year after year having to chose between the lesser of "who cares?" Of trying to get myself excited about a candidate who can speak in complete sentences. Of setting the bar so low, I can hardly look at it. They say a good man can't get elected President. I don't believe that, do you?

Friends don't let friends turn into evil imperialist dictators, yo!

"So, my friend, if you want to start using American military strength as the arm of the Lord...you can do that. We're the only superpower left. You can conquer the world, like Charlemagne! But you better be prepared to kill everyone. And you better start with me, because I will raise up an army against you and I will beat you!"

-Leo McGarry to Jed Bartlet, The West Wing

And of course, that moment of pure perfection that unfortunately completely loses its awesomeness without SMG's facial expression and vocal inflections, from the BtVS episode "Anne":

(*big sweet smile*) "I'm Buffy. The vampire slayer. And you are?"

Quoted because it means I get to pick the music. (Also a little bit because I never remember meaningful quotes from things I like.)

"The healthy human mind doesn't wake up in the morning thinking this is its last day on Earth. But I think that's a luxury, not a curse. To know you're close to the end is a kind of freedom. Good time to take... inventory. Outgunned. Outnumbered. Out of our minds. On a suicide mission. But the sand and rocks here, stained with thousands of years of warfare...

They will remember us for this.

Because, out of all our vast array of nightmares this is the one we choose for ourselves. We go forward like a breath exhaled from the Earth. With vigor in our hearts and one goal in sight: we. Will. Kill him."

From Harry Potter, because I love too many characters in that series:
“It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.”
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
And especially this one: "We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."
^ That quote is the reason Sirius is my favorite HP character.

Gandalf: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

And on the less ~deep and thoughtful~ end of the spectrum... this isn't so much a quote, but a conversation:

Cheshire Cat: Oh, by the way, if you'd really like to know, he went that way.
Alice: Who did?
Cheshire Cat: The White Rabbit.
Alice: He did?
Cheshire Cat: He did what?
Alice: Went that way.
Cheshire Cat: Who did?
Alice: The White Rabbit.
Cheshire Cat: What rabbit?
Alice: But didn't you just say - I mean - Oh, dear.
Cheshire Cat: Can you stand on your head?

(...basically I love anything the Cheshire Cat says. In any context.
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where –" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"– so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough.")

Okay, I'm kind of obsessed with quotes and I have a huge pile so I'll stop now before I dump them all here, lol.

'Here day embraces night and says: I will die with you and you will be born again with me. From the pressure of all desolations faith gushes forth. Sufferings bring their agony here, and ideas their immortality. This agony and this immortality are to mingle and compose our death. Brothers, he who dies here dies in the radiance of the future, and we are entering a grave illuminated by the dawn.'

And because I can't talk about this character without mentioning another:
'[...] they must make odd lovers. I can imagine how it is. Ecstasies where they forgot to kiss. Chaste on earth, but coupling in the infinite. They are souls that have senses. They sleep together in the stars.'

Castiel, The Man Who Would Be King:

"You know, I've been here a long time. I remember many things.

"I remember being at a shoreline, watching a little gray fish heave itself up on the beach, and an older brother saying, 'Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish.'

"I remember the Tower of Babel, all 37 feet of it, which I suppose was impressive at the time. And when it fell, they howled, divine wrath! But come on...dried dung can only be stacked so high.

"I remember Cain and Abel...David and Goliath...Sodom and Gomorrah.

"And of course, I remember the most remarkable event; remarkable because it never came to pass. It was averted by two boys, an old drunk, and a fallen angel. The Grand Story, and we ripped up the ending, and the rules, and destiny, leaving nothing but freedom and choice.

"Which is all well and good, except...well, what if I've made the wrong choice? How am I supposed to know?...

"I'm getting ahead of myself.

"Let me tell you my story. Let me tell you everything."

"Put it like this, lance-constable, Would you let a murderer off for a thousand dollars?"
"No, sir!"
"A thousand dollars'd set your mum up in a nice place in a good part of town, though."
"Knock it off, sarge, I'm not like that."
"You were when you took that dollar. Everything else is just a haggling over the price."

I tend to quote that "Everything else is just a haggling over the price" bit a lot. Drives my girlfriend nuts.
