Re: Types of media/ways of storytelling you can't get into

Superhero comics, anime & video-games. A.k.a. the Geek Trifecta.

Also "Serious Board Games For Adults".

I read some Sandman and some Hellblazer, and there's maybe one or two RPGs I enjoy, and a few anime & manga that I like - but it stops there.

I just feel really awkward trying to get into that stuff. Like there's all this extra knowledge. And most of the people I've met who are into it are either a) elitist and condescending or b) really really intense about it. Or both.

As a woman, as well, I feel really uncomfortable going to cons and comic book shops and video game stores. I just want to crawl under a rock and die.

So, wait. Can you not get into those things because you actually don't like them, or has it more to do with the fact that trying to get into them puts you in situations that make you uncomfortable?

I used to feel uncomfortable going into comic shops. I kind of took the disdainful way the shop owner acted as sexism but when I started going regularly, I realized he was just hard with people at first. Now the owner's very friendly with me. Also- it's tough getting into comics because the major titles have these huge, sprawling histories. It was easier to me to get into the tangential titles with less history (and, yes, reboots- sorry, comics fans).
