I am not so strict about characterization that I cannot accept some variation, but most of the time I want them to seem mostly the same as canon, with maybe a corner or two blunted to make things slightly easier. Don't make the changes extreme, try and keep some semblance of their canon character intact, and it's more likely to work for me.

I am however, not adverse to some bashing fics. Usually for characters I am already uncaring or ambivalent about. Most of what I currently read in HP has some level of anti-Dumbledore and anti-Weasley sentiment in it. Sometimes that can go right into outright Deatheater Ron trope and all-out bashing.

However my tolerance for bashing may be significantly lower outside HP fic.

You mean "I like fics to stay true to characters I personally like, but pull out all the sniveling paranoid smug character assassination for characters I don't. Fairness? Honesty? What's that?"

Have fun with your future career as a career politician, sweetums :)

No, I mean mostly I like characterisation to stay mostly true, weather I like the characters or not. Bashing fic is a exception that only applies in a limited area - mostly HP fandom, and if it's a H/Hr fic. Sometimes I do like non-bashing fics there too though.
