Partially Inspired by #6
(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)Are there certain types of tropes or cliches that you know are likely to change characterization but, knowing that, you're okay with the change because it goes with the trope/cliche? Or are those the stories you hate the worst? Have you ever read a story where you wish the character had actually been changed even more?
When have you been pleasantly surprised by a change in characterization? How much justification do you need in-fic to explain such a change?
Do you really hate changing characterization or is it just certain ways of changing characters (like making the character overly emotional or making someone evil super nice, etc.) that bothers you? Do you have a change in characterization you wish fandom would get behind?
Or thought exercise: how could you change your character's characterization but still have them be enough the same to please you? How far can you go?
Just give me all your thoughts!
Re: Partially Inspired by #6
If I can believe the justification (said justification can range from a well-developed story arc to a properly-specified AU to "the story's just that cracky and hilarious") for the change, I'll go for it.
If my reaction to the mischaracterization is "um...no? He's not like that. Why is he like that here?" and no answer is given, then I can't read it, period, no matter how well-written the story is otherwise.
The thing you have to decide is what makes a character, a character.

Re: Partially Inspired by #6
I am however, not adverse to some bashing fics. Usually for characters I am already uncaring or ambivalent about. Most of what I currently read in HP has some level of anti-Dumbledore and anti-Weasley sentiment in it. Sometimes that can go right into outright Deatheater Ron trope and all-out bashing.
However my tolerance for bashing may be significantly lower outside HP fic.
