Not going with classical pieces, which would be Beethoven's 5th, there are three more "modern" instrumental classicals that I like.

Two from same the same set, and it's the Jupiter, bringer of Jolity, and Mars, bringer of War, from The Planets Suites. I think the suite was made, or at least first performed, in the 1910's, possibly give or take a decade.

And one from the early 2000's I believe, from Eric Whitacre, a piece called Equus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ilQaKuWWBs), that I found while listening to a classic public radio station once, and I really enjoyed it.

Ooooh, I'd forgotten about the Planets. Mars is awesome. I'm also a fan of Holst's Second Suite in F.

Oh yes, Jupiter and Mars are my two favourites!

I am pretty sure there are a few movies whose epic action scenes have music directly inspired by Mars - like Star Wars and Star Trek 6.

Jupiter has this wonderful majestic middle bit that I love.
