I love the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack too. Forbidden Friendship and Romantic Flight are so lovely.

So instead, Spiegel Im Spiegel. http://youtu.be/B8qg_0P9L6c (which Nick Cave TOTALLY stole for his soundtrack for The Road).
Re: Favorite instrumental music?
Oxygene (all parts) by Jean Michel Jarre.
Many of the songs on the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack.
White Clouds, Force Majeure, Cloudburst Flight, and Thru Metamorphic Rocks by Tangerine Dream.
Clutter by Ronald Jenkees.
Underwaters by Leila Arab.
I have many, many more. I'm a big instrumental fan.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)Two from same the same set, and it's the Jupiter, bringer of Jolity, and Mars, bringer of War, from The Planets Suites. I think the suite was made, or at least first performed, in the 1910's, possibly give or take a decade.
Mars: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8EwBTQhl3Y)
Jupiter: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu77Vtja30c)
And one from the early 2000's I believe, from Eric Whitacre, a piece called Equus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ilQaKuWWBs), that I found while listening to a classic public radio station once, and I really enjoyed it.

I am pretty sure there are a few movies whose epic action scenes have music directly inspired by Mars - like Star Wars and Star Trek 6.
Jupiter has this wonderful majestic middle bit that I love.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)Twirling Towards Freedom by Enter the Haggis. Punk rock fiddle and bagpipe duet. I kid you not.

Re: Favorite instrumental music?
I'd also say Beethoven's 9th, but we'll have to eliminate the 4th movement and that's just not on.
Re: Favorite instrumental music?
Isn't it the fifth movement of the 9th? All copies I've had on CD have five tracks, with only the fifth one having the choir coming in.

and not counting movie scores because we had a thread on that already*,
that actually eliminates like 99% of what I could have answered but probably made my answer more relevant to the thread...(maybe sometimes I'll do a thread for band/orchestra/whatever music?)
here's what I've got:
The Glitch Mob: Fortune Days
Elvis Costello: Stalin Malone
John Mellencamp: Overture
Earth, Wind & Fire: Drum Song
Blue Man Group: Rods and Cones
Radiant: Mostar
Anything by George Winston
in fact most things published by Windham Hill
*also discounting scores to any other kind of media. this list could get stupidly long.
Re: Favorite instrumental music?
A lot of video game soundtracks, including The Sims (1, 2 and 3), Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 (with options on 3, 4 and bits of 10).
Numerous orchestral movie soundtracks.
Apocalyptica (when their music doesn't have lyrics added by a collaborator). I like when they do collabs, but they're good on their own too.
