Occasionally I end up listening to Dvorak's 9th symphony on repeat because I love it. Smetana's The Moldau is another favorite. And Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.

I love the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack too. Forbidden Friendship and Romantic Flight are so lovely.

Wow. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't heard of Dvorak before, but, well...I hadn't.

I'm really glad that you mentioned the 9th symphony. I'm listening to it now and I love it.

When David Heard whicccchhh I guess technically has words. http://youtu.be/G2ZKKXCuaYc

So instead, Spiegel Im Spiegel. http://youtu.be/B8qg_0P9L6c (which Nick Cave TOTALLY stole for his soundtrack for The Road).

Pretty much every song on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells albums. Plus, his Music of the Spheres.

Oxygene (all parts) by Jean Michel Jarre.

Many of the songs on the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack.

White Clouds, Force Majeure, Cloudburst Flight, and Thru Metamorphic Rocks by Tangerine Dream.

Clutter by Ronald Jenkees.

Underwaters by Leila Arab.

I have many, many more. I'm a big instrumental fan.

I was introduced to Two Steps From Hell a while back when I was looking for writing music. I should listen to that playlist more.

Not going with classical pieces, which would be Beethoven's 5th, there are three more "modern" instrumental classicals that I like.

Two from same the same set, and it's the Jupiter, bringer of Jolity, and Mars, bringer of War, from The Planets Suites. I think the suite was made, or at least first performed, in the 1910's, possibly give or take a decade.
Mars: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8EwBTQhl3Y)
Jupiter: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu77Vtja30c)

And one from the early 2000's I believe, from Eric Whitacre, a piece called Equus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ilQaKuWWBs), that I found while listening to a classic public radio station once, and I really enjoyed it.

Ooooh, I'd forgotten about the Planets. Mars is awesome. I'm also a fan of Holst's Second Suite in F.

Oh yes, Jupiter and Mars are my two favourites!

I am pretty sure there are a few movies whose epic action scenes have music directly inspired by Mars - like Star Wars and Star Trek 6.

Jupiter has this wonderful majestic middle bit that I love.

Time's Scar from the Chrono Cross soundtrack. It's just so pretty!

Twirling Towards Freedom by Enter the Haggis. Punk rock fiddle and bagpipe duet. I kid you not.

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Overture to the Hebrides (Fingal's Cave) by Mendelssohn. Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor by J.S. Bach as arranged for orchestra. Any film score written by John Williams from Star Wars on.

I'd also say Beethoven's 9th, but we'll have to eliminate the 4th movement and that's just not on.

I agree with you about Overture to the Hebrides (Fingal's Cave).

Isn't it the fifth movement of the 9th? All copies I've had on CD have five tracks, with only the fifth one having the choir coming in.

I listen to a lot of classical, so I guess that gets in there by default. Uh, let's see - a lot of techno/trance, I'll specifically mention Explosions in the Sky and Endorphin (with the caveat that some do sample vocal clips). Lots of video game soundtracks. And Ocean by John Butler Trio is goddamn amazing.

Not counting all the myriad band and orchestra and chamber and solo songs I love(d) to death because I used to play them,

and not counting movie scores because we had a thread on that already*,

that actually eliminates like 99% of what I could have answered but probably made my answer more relevant to the thread...(maybe sometimes I'll do a thread for band/orchestra/whatever music?)

here's what I've got:
The Glitch Mob: Fortune Days
Elvis Costello: Stalin Malone
John Mellencamp: Overture
Earth, Wind & Fire: Drum Song
Blue Man Group: Rods and Cones
Radiant: Mostar
Anything by George Winston
in fact most things published by Windham Hill

*also discounting scores to any other kind of media. this list could get stupidly long.

A great deal of classical music, including Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bach - but not restricted to them.

A lot of video game soundtracks, including The Sims (1, 2 and 3), Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 (with options on 3, 4 and bits of 10).

Numerous orchestral movie soundtracks.

Apocalyptica (when their music doesn't have lyrics added by a collaborator). I like when they do collabs, but they're good on their own too.
