Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Overture to the Hebrides (Fingal's Cave) by Mendelssohn. Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor by J.S. Bach as arranged for orchestra. Any film score written by John Williams from Star Wars on.

I'd also say Beethoven's 9th, but we'll have to eliminate the 4th movement and that's just not on.

I agree with you about Overture to the Hebrides (Fingal's Cave).

Isn't it the fifth movement of the 9th? All copies I've had on CD have five tracks, with only the fifth one having the choir coming in.

I find it fascinating that the CDs divide the fourth movement into two discrete parts. I have the Beethoven Symphonies on vinyl by George Szell and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and the fourth movement takes up one entire side. Here's the Wiki article about the structure of the Ninth Symphony, in truth the most perfect symphony ever written. My opinion, of course, but no other symphony moves me like that one does.

We had season tickets to the symphony when I was a kid, and I still remember sitting there entranced as they played Barber's Adagio for Strings.

To that I'll add Ralph Vaughn Williams "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Talis". I always thought it should be used for a soundtrack and was gratified to hear it used in "Master and Commander".

I would love to hear Adagio for Strings in person! I think there'd be tears.
