Scrivener

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
No one's fault but my own, but during NaNoWriMo I picked up the trial version of Scrivener, and then when my NaNovel petered out, I started using it to work on a fic sequel. But then I hit a major case of apathy and didn't do anything...including use the NaNo code for a discount on the full version.

Now I want to write on that story, but it's locked away in a Scrivener trial version, and I really shouldn't be spending $40. Maybe I can just write what's currently in my head in wordpad and worry about integrating it into the other next month when I'll be better able to spend on nonessentials.

(Also, does anyone know if I should have any fear of losing those other documents when I switch over to a nontrial version? It's not like "You're downloading a new one and you need to delete the old one, and all files associated with it will disappear into the ether!" situation, right?)

You will not lose any documents at all when you switch. Or at least I didn't!

Can you open Scrivener at all anymore? You might be able to open and save/export your file to use in another program. Or did you save it at all during the trial period? Because while you might not be able to open via Scrivener you can still go to the source file and open it there with another program.

Annnd I don't know if there's a time limit on the nano code, you should see if you can still use it!

Yeah, I missed time limit on the NaNo code. When I try to open things now it just pops up a dialog box saying my trial has expired and I should go by the program. I wasn't aware that I could open Scrivener files with other programs, though.

NAYRT

When using Scrivener, you can export things to other formats that you can use to open in another program. Not sure if you can open the raw data files to retrieve your works now that the trial is over (maybe poke through the program files and see if you find anything?).

I never got into Scrinever. Evernote + GoogleDocs/Dropbox all the way, everything handled locally but stored online, and all for free, no worries about trial dates, so you can totally take off a few months or years, as I practically did from fanfic without losing your stuff. :)

Scrivener saves its documents as .rtf files. It might take a while to put them back in order depending on how you had stuff organized, but if you go into the folder you'd designated for Scrivener and open up one of the .scriv files, it's actually just a folder. Under /files/docs you should be able to find your stuff, virtually any word processor will read .rtf files.

(caveat that I've got a full version of Scrivener and I don't know if the trial version locks things down in a different way.)

Also no, I don't think Scrivener will overwrite your stuff if you buy it. hope this was helpful :)

It was, thanks!
