I find it a little odd that The Annoying Human Sidekick is actually more popular than the protagonist, in this fandom.

Usually, TAHS are ignored or neglected by the fans.

I wonder why is it different here?

Because he's funny and intelligent instead of stupid comic relief. Because he's more mature than the protagonist, who tends to be quite the hypocrit sometimes. Because he's constantly afraid and terrified, but does what's necessary anyway.

I guess it's because he's really not the annoying one in this show.

Really? In my experience, supporting characters almost always outshine the main character. They tend to have more interesting personalities, better senses of humor, more complex characterization (including flaws) and so on.
