Right.

But by virtue of supporting it, you are invariably supporting it as a whole.

It's very difficult to unpick the damaging elements from it as a whole when it's a coherent system of belief ordained by god.

Which applies more generally to other groups (political parties etc), and you have to weigh up the benefit you feel the group brings against the damage it causes, the liklihood of influencing change etc. Perhaps that balance is positive, either way it's something to be aware of and that you have to answer for - if only to your self.

Christianity isn't as coherent as you seem to think it is.

Was specifically talking about catholocism there. Which literally has a centralised hierarchy and leader who can declare his opinion infallible.

I don't think it's entirely false with christianity as a whole either. You've got a central canon of works created by god, and certain required beliefs. If you start getting rid of those, really you stop being christian in any meaningful sense, but people really like those meaningless labels, and umbrella of support they lend people with it.

The equivalent would be saying that you're republican because you are against communism, and attmepting to shut down any criticism of the party with 'well I'm a republican and I don't beleive that therefore your argument is invalid'.

Fair point about Catholicism, but from what I gather even then it's not 100% coherent. I'm not Catholic though, so I can't say much about that.

As for Christianity as a whole, pretty much the only thing that defines being a Christian is the belief in the divinity of Jesus and His sacrifice and resurrection...at least that's how I see it. Anything else is, quite frankly, up for debate - there is an ongoing history of debates and splits within Christendom* over other beliefs.

Being against communism is definitely - most definitely - not the defining point of being a republican. You can be against communism and pretty much be in any political party that doesn't support it (or no political party at all). Party affiliation also does not mean that you support every single thing on that party's platform - people are simply not that homogeneous.

*an umbrella term, as outside of Catholicism, Christianity really doesn't have a single human leader, and many denominations/separate churches dislike each other or think they're the One True Church or some such
