I hate that movie so, so much. Except for Gong Li, who was like an elemental force.

I could understand the random subtitled Japanese that was inserted into it. I watched it with my mom and all I could think was, "Wait... isn't it implied they're ALREADY speaking Japanese?"

It was also weird how they had everyone talking in really stilted, halting ways and you're like...uh, I know that actor speaks at a normal clip in other roles, so why the weird voice?

*facepalm* I meant 'couldn't understand' by the way.

But yeah, it was a very visually 'pretty' movie, but it felt to me like everyone was almost reading off cue cards sometimes.

I really hated that. All I could think about was the sort of anime/manga fanfiction where they keep dumping random Japanese here and there even though it's also implied to take place in Japan with people speaking Japanese by default.

Gong Li's performance was pretty great, but I thought that the other principle actors also did well with their roles. They weren't given much, gods know.
