I hate to depress you, but I've been in fandom for over 15 years and never actually made lasting friends. But then I'm pretty much a loner irl as well.

I made one of my first fandom friends 10 years ago (and another one 8 years). We still hang out RL at least once a month. The friendship with the guy friend even survived him having an awkward crush on me.

It is possible to found lasting friendships upon fandom.

That's awesome! I'm not saying it can't happen, obviously. Just saying it hasn't for me.

I have a friend that started as a fandom friend almost 15 years ago...

Agreed. I met one of my best friends in fandom over a decade ago and I go to visit her every year. I was a bridesmaid at the wedding of another fandom friend, and I just came back from spending the weekend with a group of fandom friends that I first met about five years ago.

Really? I've made... at least seven long-term fandom friends over the course of my time in fandom. And not just internet friends, these are people I've met and hung out with and kept up with irl.

I wouldn't even consider myself that social either.

I have made some fandom friends who lasted, and I'm a loner IRL as well. I think the main thing to it is that you have to keep in contact.

Being a loner is probably why you haven't made any friends. If you aren't looking to do it, you probably won't, because even very social people will get tired of banging their heads against a brick wall of indifference. OP isn't guaranteed to make friends, but if they're actively trying and receptive, they're more likely to manage it than someone who isn't really interested.
