Good LGBT anime and manga

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Any recommendations? Not yuri, BL or bara, but regular manga and anime with LGBT characters that aren't a joke (unless it's a comedy and it isn't offensive).

FAKE.

Cops in a (hilariously imagined) version of NYC. They're in love with each other. The art is nice, the characters are likeable, and there's a female FBI agent who is treated as a competent, intelligent, asset to the crime fighting team.

I love Fake so much. I was reading the sequel just last night.

Good days indeed. Now I want to re-read the series, but it's at my parents' house. :(

There's a side couple in Bodacious Space Pirate, who are adorable. They don't get a ton of screen time, though. (Also, the name's nothing to worry about, there's literally no fanservice.)

Also, kuranosuke from Kuragehime/Princess is probably one of the best examples of a crossdresser in manga/anime. He's straight, though.

Antique Bakery. It is a joke that Ono is "a Gay of Demonic Charm" (meaning, he seduces any man he takes an interest in) but it's slice of life and mainly focuses on the lives and relationships of the men who work at a bakery.

Tiger & Bunny has Fire Emblem. From what I hear, there's a part in the new movie that touches on the difficulties he had growing up and being gay (not 100% about that though because I didn't see it myself).
pantswarrior: Kotetsu smiles, because everything's going to be fine. (kotetsu)

Mmm, yes, I was going to mention Fire Emblem. He's occasionally played for laughs, but since it's usually when he's intentionally being over-the-top to make Antonio uncomfortable, and otherwise he's portrayed as really smart and observant and tough, I'm cool with that much.

And I love the reaction he gets when he flirts with Kotetsu in what was that, episode 6? XD Kotetsu is so completely cool with Nathan it made me love the show all that much more.

Oh, I'd completely forgotten to see the movie D:
I'm on it now since it's more T&B for me, but hell yes if it gives me more Fire Emblem ♥

I was just going to say Tiger & Bunny. Nathan gets a surprising amount of character development in the new movie.

What Did You Eat Yesterday by Fumi Yoshinaga (http://www.mangago.com/read-manga/kinou_nani_tabeta/)
The Komukai Household's Circumstances by Hideyoshico (http://www.mangago.com/read-manga/the_komukai_households_circumstances/)

There are others that I can't find. Including one where a homeless young man moves in and bonds with a dollmaker who is a transvestite- it was all about their friendship.

Ixion Saga DT. One of the main characters, Mariann, is a trans woman, and I love how everyone respect her gender identity, she's popular, attractive, has tons of men flirting wit her even after knowing that she's trans. She's awesome, and the show is pretty great too.

Oh man, I did an essay on manga with trans characters so I have a list for you!

Wandering Son (already mentioned, but worth a repeat)
Genkaku Picasso
Mermaid Line (the "Ayumi and Aika" chapters)
Double House
Ai no Shintairiku
Sazanami Cherry
Ice Revolution
Mascara Blues (the third chapter)
Lovely Complex
Hunter x Hunter (this one is a gigantic long runner though so I won't blame you if you pass on it)

Have you ever read the one by Hinako Takanaga? It's classified as BL so it doesn't apply here but if you have an interest in trans manga characters, it has a transvestite character.

Have you read the series Yubisaki Milk Tea? If you have, wondering what your opinion on it is.

da

I think I suggested this when you asked for manga for your essay before, but have you read Bokura no Hentai? If so, what do you think of it? (I thought it was interesting at least that it was pointing out the difference between the main trans character and the two supporting characters who crossdress -- and the two actually have different reasons.)

Re: Good LGBT anime and manga

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
No one has said No. 6 yet?!?!?!

I believe it's not even classified as BL, but rather shounen. The love story is wonderful (2 guys) and there is no defined "seme/uke" or whatever. One of the guys, the tougher one, even (SPOILERS not really but just in case) crossdresses and has a sort of female persona (/spoilers). I don't think "being gay" is really discussed, and the anime suffers from being too short to really develop its interesting premise but... an absolute recommendation.

I would also say Mirage of Blaze, as a non-BL male/male love story.

Unless you're looking for anime that specifically deals with being gay... it's hard to separate "gay" from the BL/GL categories. But those two came to mind.

Mostly 4-koma/humorous and all lesbian/bi:
Plica
Honey x Honey (primarily aimed towards a straight audience wanting to know more about LGBT experiences)
Happy Picture Diary
Collectors

Off Time, Morishima Akiko (one-shot, but it makes me happy)

Yamaji Ebine's work
