It's different for everyone, but finding friends (in or outside of fandom) can be difficult. Most friends I've made through fandom I lost touch with or grew apart from. However, I'm SURE people can make lasting friendships in fandom and if you're still interested then all I can really say is don't give up. I met my current bff through fandom about...idk, eight years ago? It's been a long time and she's still one of my favorite people on the planet.

(IDK if you're on tumblr or not, but if you're using tumblr... As much as I like tumblr it can make interacting difficult. It isn't the best forum to make friends. Again, I know people have managed it but you might want to try different places, see what happens.)

Just a quick note about friends on tumblr. Personally I found it easier there than I EVER did on LJ or DW so... experiences vary, but if OP is willing to reach out to say, the fic writers/artists/folks they want to be friendly with... drop them a message. Anon, if you're not feeling too brave at the moment. But that's really the easiest way to go. "Hey, i really like that thing you made/wrote/did!" And you're off and running. *shrugs*

It's certainly a start! Maybe my problem is most the people I follow on tumblr don't actually post much original content or comment on posts much or discuss their personal lives of opinions much so I wouldn't really know what to say or feel comfortable 'bothering' them. Or maybe I'm just old school and like communities on LJ and DW and feel more comfortable approaching people here. However, if a person is willing to send a lot of asks and put the time and effort into it, I see how it could work. It's just not as simple on tumblr. (Even if the person answers your ask you don't get a notification, right? You have to tag them or DM that or they might miss it if they aren't watching your blog very carefully? Maybe the system has changed recently, IDK.)

I guess we're coming at this from different sides. I found it very difficult to find friends on LJ and DW but have had a much easier time on Tumblr. There are tagging issues with asks, yes but there are other options (private answers and fan mail). It's probably just a matter if preferences.

I forgot about fan mail. What exactly is the difference between an ask and fan mail? I guess fan mail is meant more for private comments or discussion (unless you choose to reply in public?), but an ask is meant for questions? (Even if it's used for comments all the time.)

That's pretty much it, yeah. Fan mail is definitely the easier way to go for private conversations, even though you can do it with asks as well. Fan mails are easier to keep track of, at least for me.
