Of COURSE most people hate Tumblr

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-02-21 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Everything that's popular with almost exclusively females, especially teenage females, is universally shat on. Sure, 50 Shades and Twilight aren't classic literature, but FSoG is one of the first mainstream erotic novels depicting a (dangerous, abusive, and inaccurate) BDSM relationship, and the Twilight Saga is one of the first popular novel series that objectified male characters just as much as the female characters (and the movies had actual Native American actors playing Native American characters instead of whitewashing them like a certain sci-fi movie that everyone seems eager to defend, even on Tumblr). Hell, certain shows that shall remain unnamed have been canceled because their viewership was mostly girls rather than the boys they were marketed toward. Tumblr has a very strange and at times impossible format and the same subset of crazy users that every website has, but damn if it isn't refreshing to finally be able to call people out on their shit without being roasted under an immediate deluge of "not all ___ are like that!!1!" or "they weren't being intentionally __ist so it doesn't count."

Teal deer says, "Tumblr is no different than any other website other than the fact that it's populated largely by teenage girls, therefore it must be a piece of shit."

I agree with you but I mostly find it funny when people around here find the tiniest opportunity to complain about Tumblr and run with it. I have my problems with the site (and some of them are even the ones that people complain about here) but every site has problems and there's a pretty varied group of people on each site despite the stereotypes.

Honestly, while I have my grievances with Tumblr (not related to the 'it's populated largely by teenage girls' thing), you're so on the money with the 'everything that's popular with females is shat upon'. That's something that's always bothered me in the back of my mind (like when Twilight was A Thing, even though I was largely ambivalent/indifferent towards it), but I couldn't really ever articulate it. So thank you for that.

(Also, please forgive my ignorance, but what 'certain sci-fi movie' are you referring to? My curiosity is piqued)

It was Star Trek Into Darkness, a title that really should have a colon in there somewhere. A white, British male played a character named Khan Singh (which are both surnames from very different regions, so if you can't tell, I kind of don't like the character on the basis of a lot of things besides his portrayal).

I get that there were two other actors who rejected the role (although as far as I know, neither of them were Middle Eastern or Indian) before BC got it. And I get that casting a Middle Eastern or Indian man as the terrorist would be unseemly, especially since the movie came out fairly soon after the Boston Bombing. But really, having one other Middle Eastern character who was capable and worked for the good guys would have quieted potential accusations. And then I have a bunch of problems with Khan from an artistic and not political perspective, too, but that's a discussion for my fellow film-watching friends (say that three times fast).

Teal deer says, "It is indeed the Star Trek movie with Cucumberpatch, as the anon above me said."

Twilight and 50 Shades are shat upon because they're shit. Tacking a few socially redeeming elements onto what is fundamentally a pile of crap is akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

I have nothing but praise for teenage girls who prefer material that is not literary or cinematic manure, even if it has its flaws, and who furthermore manage not to be judgemental-as-fuck moral absolutists or self-indulgent whiners. They do exist on Tumblr, they're just not the majority.
