I know hardly anything about this series (I only know the basics and what's been spoiled by people I follow on Tumblr, haha), but if there's one thing I can thank 'Attack on Titan' for, it's allowing this wonderful video to actually be a thing.

Uh, no they're fucking not. They're overthrowing the government so they can find out various secrets like why the fuck there's titans in the walls and how people can turn into titans and where they originally came from.

The Scouting Legion wants to kill all the titans so humans can leave the walls. Taking over the government is just the best way to do that.

This. There's a lot of plot going on, but it is not random nor irrelevant. Pretty much from the start, we've been lead to distrust the government. This isn't shocking. The titans continue to rip apart and eat the cast of main characters... just because the most recent chapter, no one got limbs ripped off doesn't mean the titans are gone.

I agree with you that it's not irrelevant at all, but I do think that the pacing of the story overall is kind of wonky and it could be structured better, imo. I mean it seriously took them THIS LONG to figure out that the government was corrupt?
And THIS LONG to realize that they are in fact the most physically capable branch of the military and in possession of a whole lot of weapons?
Seriously, guys.
(tbh I was headcanoning a coup from around chapter 3...)

More like it took them this long to get a weapon (Eren) that not only has enough fighting power but which is also a political weapon. Even more importantly, for the first time they have real hope to save the humanity and find out what the fuck is going on with the Titans.

Oh, I fully agree. We've done the 'capture Eren' subplot several times over now and despite all the fuss about Historia we only learned about how shit her childhood was. Yeah, and? I'm honestly hoping that the anime will streamline this a lot more.

The only thing I disagree with is the fact that the coup seemed obvious. The government always seemed corrupt, sure, but not overly so considering the setting and time period. It's only until we learned about the wall titans and about the other shifters did we (and the characters) realise that said corruption is much more insidious than we thought and nothing short of a coup was going to get them answers.

It is. But like the zombie genre, just because humanity is under threat of being eaten alive by monsters doesn't mean that humans will stop being bastards. There's political intrigue, classism, secret conspiracies, and all the other sorts of shit that exist in any society. Dealing with the monsters usually means dealing with that shit too.
