what's your opinion of them?

They had some good songs.

Well I certainly appreciate their presence in areas around Australia Day.

Oh hey, you're a fellow Australian!

Agreed. I think some people just use Australia Day as an excuse to get completely plastered and start brawls.

God yes.

Though they could do a better job with public transport. Idk what part you're from, but there are so many less train guards employed in my area now and the police only show up when they're called.

Doesn't help that the public attitude is: You're catching the train alone at night? You want to be raped.

They're not a monolith, nor do they necessarily have stuff in common more than individual people of any other profession, and they're not an institutional monolith either, since they vary wildly by department, state, country, etc, so by definition I can't have any overarching opinion of them?

I prefer the lower voice Sting has started using more as he ages, so I generally don't like them as much as I do his solo stuff. But King Of Pain and Message In A Bottle are still a couple of my favorite songs.

All cops are pigs

Some pigs are adorable and also make good buddies

A diverse series of law enforcement groups made up of a lot of good people dedicated to protecting others who work long hours away from their families, don't get paid nearly enough for putting themselves in danger every day and are deeply under-appreciated, and also an unfortunate number of power-tripping assholes who set the general public stereotype for all of them.

Re: police

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly appreciate what they do but have lived some places where the local police force was so corrupt that I would never willingly have any contact with them. Other places it depends on the individual officers.

Re: police

Meh, like most people where I live.

I mean...eh...basically, it's viewed as a necessary evil - just like anything to do with the government, or government power - so they're viewed with a fair amount of apathy and cynicism. ...And as a whole, the people here are against giving them more power [just like we are with any other part of the government.

But they do sometimes surprise us sometimes, like in the past view years they sided with the people against a law that would have given them more power.

tl;dr: They're to be viewed the same as any *other* part of the government: With a mix of apathy and cynicism.

Constables and low level street officers: those bullies in high school. Surprise, they're still bullies.

Detectives and mid-tier officers: good guys. Generally not assholes and almost always helpful.

SWAT and special tasking: bro tier

Intelligence and homeland security: please don't put me on a list I'm not a terrorist

Simultaneously wary of their potential to abuse their power, happy to have them around when I'm in trouble, and attracted to a woman in uniform.

Re: police

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck 'em. Law "enforcement" and the military in my country have done so much to destabilize international relations, done so much to undermine democracy, and contributed so much to international terrorism. The world needs far less fear-mongering bullies who look for a fight where none exists, and more people willing to find peaceful and respectful solutions to society's problems.

As for local, on-the-beat cops? Until they (a) learn to read and (b) learn to tell the difference between something that requires their attention (for example, attempted murder) and something that doesn't (physically assauting my country's citizens in the name of "security") - fuck them too.

my kneejerk reaction is negative but most police aren't giant dickbags though I do wish they'd put more effort into cleaning up their own shit rather than covering it up.

Other than that, just another branch of the government that has a job to do, sometimes does it better than others, and should be more transparent than it is.

These are my opinions on the police as a whole (obviously doesn't apply to every department either) and not any individual cop.

I'm in an urban area in a large American city, honestly just feel safer knowing they're around. Doesn't hurt that I've never had a cop be rude or condescending to me, or any other kind of nasty. The police force here is very polite and pretty darn nice.

Respect, trust, I dunno? They usually do their jobs pretty well...

Now if we could get down the amount of cases that go cold or are dropped because of a lack of recourses I would be happier, but that isn't the fault of the police but the fault of the politicians who decide the amount of money the police get to use.

Ehh... People doing a job that can sometimes be difficult. A job just as prone to get total assholes in it as any other job.

The nearest I have personally been to cop is one time my mother was pulled over for a breathalyzer. We were giggly as hell over it, because we knew it would show nothing. The cop was polite and just doing his job.

Re: police

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Depends entirely on the officer. My father was a police chief many years ago, and though a bit on the conservative side he was a good man whom I do not believe would ever have abused his power or harmed anyone who wasn't blatantly violating the law and posing a threat to others. The few other police with whom I have ever personally interacted were politely doing their jobs.

However, I've also always lived in medium-sized towns in a relatively liberal U.S. state. I'll be the first one to say "fuck the police" when they're throwing their weight around, shooting first and asking questions later, or just generally being dickbags.
