I was kind of fed up with Sam and Dean around S5. But then, in my head the show ended in S5, so it's all good.

Character everyone loves and I hate: John Sheppard in SGA. Well, not hate as such, but I so terminally did not care about him, and kept wishing we'd get more focus on more interesting characters (in the show, but especially in fanfic).

Character everyone hates and I love: I don't think I've any really controversial choices, but characters I've gotten into arguments/fights defending include James Rhodes & Nick Fury (MCU), Cora (OUAT) and the Sixth Doctor (DW).

Confession: I haven't even watched S6 yet. I started watching SPN, and I got up to S5 and then I just... stopped. It felt like it ended there, and it would be almost wrong for it to continue.

I mean, I still keep up with updates & stuff. But it should have ended there.

People hate James Rhodes? I can understand Fury, but Rhodes? He was awesome!

I'm fairly sure it stems from IM2 and taking the armour while leaving Tony a wreck on the floor. That's been the tenor of most of the arguments I've had over him, anyway. Which, okay, but that situation was SO much more complicated than 'Rhodey was randomly mean to a dying Tony', and I think I've had this argument at least six times with people.

James Rhodes is awesome and I love him, and I honestly don't care anymore beyond that.

I think overall, Rhodey and his relationship with Tony are pretty great, but I do have a problem with his actions in IM2: specifically, ever since he got back from Afghanistan, Tony had made it clear that he never wanted a weapon he made put into the hands of the government or anyone else he didn't trust. Tony made no secret of that, and he actively fought to prevent it. Rhodey taking the Mark II suit and turning it over to the military and Hammer was a betrayal of one of Tony's most deeply-held values. That's not okay.

True. However, Rhodey kept the suit he took for himself, and deliberately withheld the reactor technology from the military. Given that Hammer was already reverse-engineering Iron Man like armours and Stane had already done it before as well, and that the suit itself, while a marvel of engineering, probably isn't mechanically that problematic, it's the reactor and probably the OS that would have been the problems had they fallen into military hands. The OS via JARVIS is probably more safe than just about any other feature of the armour, and Rhodey deliberately withheld and protected the reactor. And Tony must have trusted him to do at least that much, because the armour was set up for Rhodey to start with, and Rhodey's always been up front how much he values his service. Tony had to have known that if he gave Rhodey an armour to start with, it was going to be used at least some of the time in the service of the military.

Still not okay, no. But by this stage Tony had given them plenty of reason to think he was legitimately unstable and to be very worried about his health and fitness to use the armour (he fired repulsors, while drunk, in a room full of civilians, for entertainment - those things can blow heads off). Rhodey was acting out of anger and frustration and probably some genuine worry that Tony was becoming a danger to himself and others, and if that was the case there had to be something somewhere who could go toe to toe with him if anything went wrong.

It was wrong. But there were clear and understandable reasons for it, and even as he did it he was protecting the most important part of the armour's secrets, even from the people he'd given his oath to serve.

I do concede that Rhodey deserves credit for keeping the arc reactor out of anybody else's hands. I'm still not okay with him turning over the armor in the first place, but he did at least hold back the most sensitive components, you're right about that.

I agree. Supernatural ended in season 5. Its the only way I can still enjoy the earlier seasons and like any of the characters.

And totally agree on John Sheppard. I really don't like him. He's the sort of wise-cracking, rule-breaking, casual character type that Jack O'Neill was but in all the wrong ways and without any of Jack's charm. He's just so wrong so often and insubordinate and yet the show pulls itself in circles to make it so he was actually right.

Yeah, this was one of the things that did bother me about SGA. I know the Stargate 'verse in general runs on miraculous last-minutes saves, but there were several episodes where by all rights the things they did should not have worked, and it rubbed me the wrong way that characters who pointed this out were dismissed.

I hate what Cora became, but at the same time I get weird when people bash her, so yeah. Especially when it comes to Cora/Rumpelstiltskin. I don't ship it, but I don't get when people (okay, Rumbelle shippers, and I am one) claim they never actually loved each other, or she never loved him, or he never loved her, because somehow that makes his love for Belle less special. Love isn't some weird zero-sum game, and that argument reminds me of people who make a big deal about women being virgins when they get married. Don't give me that "I never loved anyone until I met you" bullshit, especially on Rumple's end, since he's 300+ fucking years old.

I'm mostly terrified of her as a person, and I hate especially what she did to Regina, but as a character I madly adore her and I absolutely loved the story she and Rumple had. It was so very ... Shakespearean tragedy? They loved each other, they genuinely did, enough that he amended a deal for her and enough that she teetered on the brink of running away with him and sacrificing everything she'd worked for, but then fear and ruthlessness and politics intervened, and she felt more need for power than the uncertainty of loving someone who could be used against her. So she ripped her own heart out. If nothing else, you've got to be awed by the nerve that takes. Whatever the hell else you say about the woman, she was goddamn impressive.

It's one of those grand tragedies that leaves scarred and broken hearts behind it for true love to heal, and I've never understood why (yes) Rumbelle shippers in particular want to erase it, erase her, when it doesn't even threaten their ship. It arguably even enhances it. I mean, it explains so much about Rumple, about why Belle's more or less every action kept confusing him and scaring him, why he kept coming back to her anyway. With the contrast of the dark and passionate love he had for Cora, you can see why the gentler, more pervasive love he has for Belle simultaneously scares and attracts him.

So yeah, I don't get it. I find 'I loved and was broken for it, but you gave me hope to love again' much more compelling than 'I never loved anyone until I met you'. The latter seems too fragile, like it will be gone the minute the illusions are gone, but the latter has already known hardship and killing tragedy. When one of your characters is a 300 year old demonic sorcerer who's been through so much he's barely recognisable anymore, you're going to need something a little stronger than a dream of first love that he's already seen smashed so many times.
