I find it especially horrifying because it is the depiction of something real, cold, calculating and cruel, that some governments do to their citizens.

Perhaps US people are so used to executions that they generally don't think of them as wrong, but this non-USian nonnie finds them absolutely reprehensible, even for the most vile serial killers.

So I can't watch them. They make me want to vomit. They aren't crimes of passion. They aren't from someone "evil". They're from *governments*. Who are voted in by, and rule over, people.

Please don't generalize. There are many of us who disagree with the use of the death sentence. There's a reason fictional executions are treated in most TV shows and films as scary, uncomfortable scenes.

I said "generally", because I thought it "perhaps" might be true that the "majority" agreed with it.

And it being portrayed as "scary" and "uncomfortable" doesn't mean people might not agree with it IRL. JFC.

You have no idea how many citizens of the US agree or disagree with it, but there you go again, trying to insinuate that the majority of us DO agree with it (and being condescending about it at that) by denying that the portrayal of execution in our media is any indication of how we see it here. Gimme a break.

"Perhaps US people are so used to executions that they generally don't think of them as wrong..."

Come on, anon. Do you agree with every single piece of legislation your country has? Tarring all the people of one country with one brush makes you sound like you're trolling or you're really, really ignorant.

Do better next time, please.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was speculating that the majority perhaps agreed with it. No one else in the thread said "perhaps this is terrifying because it is sanctioned in real life", and when I read US people talking about executions, I really DO perceive a difference than from people in countries where it is illegal. You might think I'm trolling, because you're so fucking narrow minded about cultural differences that you can't even *imagine* I might have a valid opinion, but I've been watching from the outside for a long time. And IF you'll notice, once again, a) speculation, and b) majority.

Legislation does set norms, in case you hadn't noticed. This is a big reason why changing the law in so many ways is so important: because it effects social change beyond the immediate legislative effects. Do you want to talk about it? My partner's a lawyer so it's a huge interest of mine.

Polls in the UK consistently bring in a large majority in favour of capital punishment for certain crimes, although our government abolished it nearly fifty years ago. It's not about nationality.

lol are you under the impression that executions in the US are televised prime time events or something? we don't "watch them" either.

They also don't happen all that often, jfc. You think by the tone of anon's comment that we round up and execute people on a regular basis.

At least in California the wait time between sentencing someone to death and the actual execution is years.
