Hey, we all have different things that scare us. Doesn't matter if it's not the "height of horror" to other people. It only matters that it is to you.

As for the scene itself, I do have to agree that it's very well-acted and well done in general. It doesn't scare me so much, but I do find it very emotional.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I found the scene very powerful and creepy, even though it didn't really hit my fear buttons.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I can't watch or read execution scenes in general. Even if I hate the character and know they're a horrible person who did the most terrible things... I can't watch. It makes me feel nauseous (if I liked the character it does for a long time).
I guess we all have our squicks.

(I guess with lots of fictional characters, we at least know they were guilty (sometimes not and uuuugh), while in real life there is often doubt and mistakes are made and no. Can't even think of it.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way, anon. The powerlessness of it really twists something in me. I'm a vengeful person (absolutely) but the idea of someone moving toward their death, with no freedom and no choice about it...it's pretty terrifying.

OP

Exactly exactly exactly.

That episode is so good. And it's so good, partially for the reason you stated. Brad Douriff did an outstanding job playing the role. You couldn't help but be affected by his execution, even if you felt that he was a legitimately evil SOB. (That's to say nothing of Gillian Anderson's awesome performance in that episode.)

Brad Dourif is best at everything.

Heartily seconded.

Very much yes. His Grima Wormtounge was superb and he did such a good Piter De Vries in the Dune movie that his portrayal is now my head!canon of that character.

*That's* who he is. Thanks, Anon. I knew I recognized his face.

He truly is.

I find it especially horrifying because it is the depiction of something real, cold, calculating and cruel, that some governments do to their citizens.

Perhaps US people are so used to executions that they generally don't think of them as wrong, but this non-USian nonnie finds them absolutely reprehensible, even for the most vile serial killers.

So I can't watch them. They make me want to vomit. They aren't crimes of passion. They aren't from someone "evil". They're from *governments*. Who are voted in by, and rule over, people.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't generalize. There are many of us who disagree with the use of the death sentence. There's a reason fictional executions are treated in most TV shows and films as scary, uncomfortable scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I said "generally", because I thought it "perhaps" might be true that the "majority" agreed with it.

And it being portrayed as "scary" and "uncomfortable" doesn't mean people might not agree with it IRL. JFC.

"Perhaps US people are so used to executions that they generally don't think of them as wrong..."

Come on, anon. Do you agree with every single piece of legislation your country has? Tarring all the people of one country with one brush makes you sound like you're trolling or you're really, really ignorant.

Do better next time, please.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was speculating that the majority perhaps agreed with it. No one else in the thread said "perhaps this is terrifying because it is sanctioned in real life", and when I read US people talking about executions, I really DO perceive a difference than from people in countries where it is illegal. You might think I'm trolling, because you're so fucking narrow minded about cultural differences that you can't even *imagine* I might have a valid opinion, but I've been watching from the outside for a long time. And IF you'll notice, once again, a) speculation, and b) majority.

Legislation does set norms, in case you hadn't noticed. This is a big reason why changing the law in so many ways is so important: because it effects social change beyond the immediate legislative effects. Do you want to talk about it? My partner's a lawyer so it's a huge interest of mine.

Polls in the UK consistently bring in a large majority in favour of capital punishment for certain crimes, although our government abolished it nearly fifty years ago. It's not about nationality.

lol are you under the impression that executions in the US are televised prime time events or something? we don't "watch them" either.

I find his scene with Scully (where she keeps seeing her dad no the chair instead of him) to be one of the best scenes of the whole show. This episode is my favorite probably, of all the seasons. The actors are just all magnificent in it and the creepy factor is unparalleled.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this episode as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me, OP. Sure the series had more conspicuously horrific villains/monsters, but this episode has always been a standout for me because of Dourif's performance-- one of the best in a series known for its excellent casting.

I'm not even bothered by much real-life gore (I've spent my fair share of time on Liveleak.), but that scene in Green Mile where the execution goes wrong still grosses me the fuck out.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Slightly offtopic, but ever since Michael Clarke Duncan died, I can't watch the Green Mile anymore. I just can't do it.

I have an execution scene in my little Kindle-book... a hanging, in a fictional society. I tried to portray "why some people/some societies want this kind of punishment" against a backdrop of discomfort, a feeling of indirect murder on the part of the main character responsible for helping to capture the criminal even though he had no say in the sentence, and... smells. I think an execution-scene that *isn't* creepy isn't done right. It's just a creepy kind of thing all-around.

And this X-Files episode is, indeed, an excellent episode. I find the episode more existentially-terrifying than most, it's not a Monster of the Week who just wants to eat your face kind of episode, it deals with grief and, in a way, the idea of Hell. The condemned man sees the ghosts of his victims, staring at him in the halls and he feels like the moment of his death, he will be going to a very real personal Hell for the things he did. It doesn't matter if he deserves it, that's frickin' scary.

I also seem to remember, the last time I watched it, thinking that Scully made the right decision. I mean, if the guy wasn't just stringing her along and really did have access to channel her father... I wouldn't want the final words of a loved one given to me through the mind and mouth of a vicious skeezeball serial murderer like that.

(Just so memory serves, we are talking about "Beyond the Sea," right)?
