It's sad. I still don't agree with keeping foxes as pets.

Even if the owners do everything possible to keep them happy and healthy, they're still not safe in a heavily populated environment because of the dangerous lack of public education.

I never really considered that keeping foxes was bad as long as you kept them safe, but this really made me realise that no matter what the owners do, there are still going to be people who will get angry and try to put them down anyway :( I'm really sad for the owners, I hate that stuff like this happens. I had to learn about the UK's Dangerous Dogs Act that was written without consultation of experts leading to lots of dogs being put down like this before somebody managed to get something done about it.

Ugh. Politics and animal safety don't mix well. I understand public pressure, but coming up with new laws and breed restrictions on the spot is never the right answer.

When I lived outside of town, I was a trained 'foster carer' for injured wildlife. My enclosures were double fenced, with a gap of 3ft all the way around, so there was no way for anyone to touch the animals. I still had numerous complaints and dealings with the police because "a concerned parent" believed her children might accidentally find themselves INSIDE the enclosure with a wild animal.

I believe this was also the woman I had asked several times to stop trying to feed the animals, who told me that she should be allowed to feed them because her kid wanted to.

/facepalm

There's a breeding program - I think it's in Russia - that is creating domesticated foxes. There was an article about this in National Geographic a while back. I wouldn't see a problem with one of those foxes. A random wild fox, though, even if hand-reared, doesn't seem like a good idea at all.

I don't know very much about it and couldn't find a good source but what I have heard is that the funding for that program is mostly gone because it started under the Soviets.

It was originally a study in genetic behavioural traits for the purpose of breeding foxes for the fur industry that wouldn't bite their captors.

My problem is mostly with the fact that no matter how well-trained a pet fox may be, they are still recognisable as foxes, which most people see as pests. People are varying amounts of stupid and crazy when they have strong opinions about something. I just think it's a bad idea to put an animal like that at risk because you wanted to keep it as a pet.
