(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:00 am (UTC)(link)For instance, I love third party POV stories and the best results for those are generally using OCs. But not if this OC will end up being the main focus of the story and getting closer emotionally to the main protagonist(s) than their significant others (if any) or playing matchmaker.
Just as bad as having the main character fall in love with a Mary Sue is the way so many OCs are somehow so immediately sympathetic and trustworthy that famously secretive or reserved characters open up to these OCs and easily reveal personal secrets they have carefully hidden to their family/friends/significant others/themselves because they can tell immediately these OCs can be trusted?!
This used to happen all the time in Highlander crossovers and Methos (admittedly a logical crossover character) would just blurt out his real name and age to any stranger he met. Yeah, right.
The same remark applies to crossovers which are thinly disguised excuses to flail over how bad ass one's favorite characters are vs another fandom's. I just unknowingly read several chapters of one of those crossovers recently before I realized what it was all about: the story was fairly well written -not full of typos and grammatical errors- so it took me far too long to realize what it was all about.
This is rather irritating because I like fusions and crossovers which manage to explore my favorite characters in an original way, by having them meet people with entirely different worldviews and priorities, (I did mention loving third party POV stories, right?), but I hate the bashing which too often happens when these crossovers are done for the sole purpose for demonstrating how 'my fandom is so much better than yours' because my favorite characters would win a death match against yours.
Mary Sues (as opposed to interesting OCs, the type that do not take over from the main protagonists of the fandom I mean) are not that much of a problem because they are so easy to spot: they are just so perfect, so understanding, so intuitive, so patient, so attractive to everyone in their immediate vicinity! Somehow they are always right no matter what the topic is and the main characters (even if they do not romance the OC or flirt with them because they are married or some such narrow-minded and reprehensible reason) have this deep emotional connection with them which they do not have even with their canon friends/lovers/family. So they are easy to spot and avoid: very often indeed the summary alone gives it away...

At least that's how I hope they meant it that way.
