To be honest, if the description gives any indication of an OC (male ir female) being paired off witha canon character, I avoid it like the plague

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be easier to say you don't read romance or erotica?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Not really. They don't like OC/Canon Character pairing but they might love pairings (even crack parings) of canon characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
No. I'll read OC/OC romance/erotica in books, or canon character/canon character romance/erotica in fanfics.
OC/canon character will always feel like some kind of author's self insert or wish fulfillment, which is fine, but I'm not interested in this.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Same. People can write whatever they want, but when it comes to fanfic I prefer reading about the canon characters when it comes to romance being a major part of the fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I actually like OCs in fics, but not as main character and definitely not if they're in a romantic relationship with a canon character.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it depends on the fandom. My fandom main characters are brother and sister, and I don't enjoy incest, so I always, always look for OCs when it comes to romance.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I am wary of OCs, but I do not necessarily skip them unless they are introduced to romance is just as bad) a main protagonist and said romance is the main focus of the story. Or 'recognize a deep connection with' or whatever.

For instance, I love third party POV stories and the best results for those are generally using OCs. But not if this OC will end up being the main focus of the story and getting closer emotionally to the main protagonist(s) than their significant others (if any) or playing matchmaker.

Just as bad as having the main character fall in love with a Mary Sue is the way so many OCs are somehow so immediately sympathetic and trustworthy that famously secretive or reserved characters open up to these OCs and easily reveal personal secrets they have carefully hidden to their family/friends/significant others/themselves because they can tell immediately these OCs can be trusted?!

This used to happen all the time in Highlander crossovers and Methos (admittedly a logical crossover character) would just blurt out his real name and age to any stranger he met. Yeah, right.

The same remark applies to crossovers which are thinly disguised excuses to flail over how bad ass one's favorite characters are vs another fandom's. I just unknowingly read several chapters of one of those crossovers recently before I realized what it was all about: the story was fairly well written -not full of typos and grammatical errors- so it took me far too long to realize what it was all about.

This is rather irritating because I like fusions and crossovers which manage to explore my favorite characters in an original way, by having them meet people with entirely different worldviews and priorities, (I did mention loving third party POV stories, right?), but I hate the bashing which too often happens when these crossovers are done for the sole purpose for demonstrating how 'my fandom is so much better than yours' because my favorite characters would win a death match against yours.

Mary Sues (as opposed to interesting OCs, the type that do not take over from the main protagonists of the fandom I mean) are not that much of a problem because they are so easy to spot: they are just so perfect, so understanding, so intuitive, so patient, so attractive to everyone in their immediate vicinity! Somehow they are always right no matter what the topic is and the main characters (even if they do not romance the OC or flirt with them because they are married or some such narrow-minded and reprehensible reason) have this deep emotional connection with them which they do not have even with their canon friends/lovers/family. So they are easy to spot and avoid: very often indeed the summary alone gives it away...

even if they do not romance the OC or flirt with them because they are married or some such narrow-minded and reprehensible reason

Er, WHAT? Fidelity is not narrow-minded and reprehensible, thank you.

They might mean that the character refusing to get into a relationship with the Sue is treated as reprehensible in the fic, and such reasons like being married are treated as "narrow-minded" in the fic.

At least that's how I hope they meant it that way.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I have no interest whatsoever in Sue!fic, but some of my favourite fics are canon character/OC. In the hands of good writers, it's a fabulous way to explore the individual canon character outside of the normal paradigms of their relationships with other canon characters. I love my otps, but a lot of the fic for them treads the same paths, or makes their relationship the absolute focus of the story when there are far more (in my mind) interesting mechanisms available. Good OC fic, in my experience, provides more freedom from that.

Plus there are some fandoms where there just aren't any canon characters that go with with the particular character I want to read about.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't suppose you could provide some examples?

Also, do you mean in fandoms where there is no canon pairing for the canon character in question?

And if so, are said characters usually the main protagonists or secondary or minor characters in the original canon material?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
na

I don't suppose you could provide some examples?

+1. Pics or it didn't happen, as the saying goes.

Absolutely, happy to. I'm not on my own PC at the moment, so my access to my favourites is limited, but:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/552991?view_adult=true & http://archiveofourown.org/works/730438 Downton Abbey, Thomas/OMC, long and gorgeous and full of character-development/character-deconstruction stuff (especially the first one) - and an example of a canon with limited other characters that would work.

Supernatural, Dean/omcs (I have a lot of these saved, because it's my FAVOURITE THING, but again, limited access right now, so):
http://glorious-spoon.livejournal.com/18253.html - long and wonderful.
sexual identity/character examination fics:

porn, porn, wonderful porn: http://kaylennz.livejournal.com/6208.html

And, as an example of dealing with something different for a character that could potentially get clogged up with shipping/other character's histories getting in the way, etc etc: Boy Meets World, Eric coming to a realisation fic: http://archiveofourown.org/works/214244

Oh, and, just noticed the second part of your comment (responded with the recs in a bit of a hurry).

Not so much lack of canon pairing, although that's certainly part of it, but also canons that just don't have a lot of characters even for non-canon shipping. For eg, I adore and would love to read fic for a certain character on a local family drama, but ever single other character is either one of his family members, or their partners. I love gen, but fics that pair him with an OC are another way of looking at him again.

I've been obsessively reading and rereading this author lately. Plenty of OCs, including some Thomas Barrow/OMC fics.

Ditto, I'm just not there for original characters...especially if they're paired up with canon characters.

What really makes me wary is when it's the first pairing listed. I have seen the occasional fic where there's CC/OC pairing as a background thing, and the fic is like "Oh BTW, Canon Character X has a girlfriend and gets married" but the fic however does not look deeply into that relationship because it is not the feature pairing.

On the other hand, I have seen fics that have background OC/CC relationships but don't tag it at all because it is so background we only know it happens so as to explain where Canon Character's children come from.
