This is not shallow, and I get what you mean, OP. Robots have their own sexiness.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how this fandom has no shipping wars because everyone's too busy arguing over the mechanics of how the characters get it on.

Unless you count the exclusively het shippers in the fandom who think mechs should only be paired with femmes, even though only one in ten Transformers were ever female.

Looking at this in the framework of MLP fandom, I don't think it's an issue of creativity. Just because an author likes a pairing and thinks it has chemistry doesn't mean they're willing to write about pony sex. Robot sex is slightly less disturbing, but it's no surprise many authors would rather keep the characters and lose the kink.

(Of course, if they humanize while writing the characters OOC, then I don't see the point at all.)

i will never understand the appeal of robot sex in general, especially the transformer kind

they don't even have genitalia

(and i side eye fanart of robots with magical dicks. if they absolutely must be given genitalia, why is it always dicks?)

giggles

Dry hump, aww yea!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Given the givens, I don't think that's shallow at all. I think it makes perfect sense, actually.

I mean, I wouldn't want to read about my favorite human pairing fucking, say, tiger holoforms of one another.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it curious how I read this one fic in my fandom who were exactly like the ones you're describing, but I thought it was so original and creative, but then, it was the exception and not the norm. What I'm getting at, is that I think is curious how something that can be good in a fandom, can be bad in another.

If they were the norm I think I'd be as annoyed as you are, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! I'd never read holoform and when I encountered it I thought it was super creative and loved it. (Like keelywolfe's fic! LOVE!)
Of course the fact that my transformers ship is half human and half robot means they have to go one way or the other...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in the Transformers fandom, but I would be bothered by it too. If I wanna read about robots having sex, I want them to be robots having sex, you know?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the Transformers fandom, but I guess this as good a place as any to ask this question. Can someone please explain to me how the mechanics and logistics of robot sex work? I'm not meaning to judge, I am genuinely curious.

Not in the fandom, but I like to imagine electromagnetic eroto-stimulation.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There's sticky, which is basically robot penises.

Some people substitute this for a jack plug and it works like plugging your headphones in an iPod or something. (I personally like this one.)

There's plug n play that involves hooking wires together.

There's spark contact where they touch the sparks in their chests together. Sparks are the equivalent to souls. If those go out a Transformer will die.

I think that's all of them. Anyone want to add in? Feel free.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This is more information than you probably ever wanted about robots banging each other, but you asked for mechanics and logistics, so...

Tactile- Sexy touching. The characters respond to pain in anthropomorphized ways, exchange friendly physical contact in anthropomorphized ways, and seem to find certain kinds of sensations physically pleasant, so why not anthropomorphize a little more?
Some writers add a handwave about (or focus on) building up and releasing of electrical charge. It's canon that these robots can get 'over-energized' (ie, drunk) off of fuel that's too high grade, so they kind of stretch that concept a bit to include pleasurable overcharging in other forms.

Plug and play- Exchanging data and/or charge more directly, through literal cords, wires, plugs, ports, and the like. Sometimes written somewhat anthropomorphicly (think of how we class electronics connectors as 'male' or 'female'), sometimes written decidedly more alien.

Sticky- Robotic equivalents of penises and vaginas. Depending on the fanfic author, these may either be naturally occurring, engineered into the robot race long ago (the same way that they have things like cockpits and car seats), or optional body modifications that individual robots went and got added because they thought it would be hot.
Regardless of the explanation (if any), it's not uncommon in the porny side of the fandom for authors to give characters BOTH. You can find fics with, say, Arcee (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/thumb/3/37/ArceeG1-2010storypage.jpg/312px-ArceeG1-2010storypage.jpg) penetrating someone with her spike, or Starscream (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/7/79/Starscreamg1.jpg) being penetrated in his valve.

Sparkplay- Sex via one character literally touching another's physical soul, and/or having having their own make contact with or merge with their partners. There's a lot of overlap here with the sort of soulbonding tropes you get in wider fandom.

Fascinating, thanks for the detailed response.

Or maybe it's because they enjoy the TF characters but prefer human/humanoid smut? There are plenty of people who write robot-on-robot for you to enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, if that's the case I'd prefer they do a straight-up human AU rather than having the robots have sex with holoforms (unless it's explicitly a kinky thing for the TFs and attention is still paid to their robot bodies).

Why does this not fall under the category of "author is writing for themself, not for potential audience"? Unless they're advertising it incorrectly, who cares if that's what they want to write?

If it's shallow, I don't want to be deep. I can get human smut in pretty much any other fandom ever, give me my sexy robots, dammit.

Having been in the fandom in the past, I agree with you. What's the appeal of them doing it just like humans when I want to read about them doing it like robots? (Nevermind that I favour Sticky more than plug-and-play.)

But then I just wonder if that's a sign of my having been in the fandom that I don't like holoform sex.

I do however have no problem with holoforms for a human/mech relationship.

This doesn't seem shallow to me. This seems perfectly reasonable.
