You can be sensible and have no fun, or you can do something cool. At least Ron got a new wand from it.

Yeah. The secret reminds me a bit uncomfortably of the kind of crab-apples attitude some people have about the poor, the whole HDU HAVE NICE THINGS attitude some people when a poor person dares have a goddamn iPad.

A trip or a new console is a ONE time expense. constantly living from day to day is where it gets hard. Eventually the Weasleys would have run it through if they hadn't gone on a trip, and what do they get out of it when they seem to get by just fine?

Same here. It could be a gift or donation. Or maybe poor or less-than-fortunate person *LE GASP* actually BUDGETS FOR NICE THINGS.

It's like people have nothing better to do than to monitor somebody else's spending and then judging. (You'd think with that kind of time and energy, they could be doing something to allow themselves some nice things as well.)

This. Even poor people have to live instead of just survive every once in awhile.

My first thought too.

It's like that episode of House where House is berating a guy at the free clinic for having an iPod but no health insurance. I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and yell "Dude! Having health insurance is like buying a new iPod EVERY MONTH." If you have $20 left over at the end of each month, you can save up to buy an iPod within a year and it should last you at least several years. That $20 a month isn't going to be enough to cover major monthly expenses that you can't afford already, like rent or insurance.

So true, this secret reminded me of the time(s?) when we had threads arguing about how the Weasleys were abusive for having so many kids when they "couldn't take care of them all." I'm feeling the same uncomfortable vibes here.

It reminds me of the one time I came up against that sentiment when I was 12? I think? I had a big class excursion I had to save up for. I got some money for my birthday and spent it on buying a couple of smallish sets of Lego. Someone told me I should have used the money on the excursion funds.

Screw you! I still have parts of those Lego sets even now, 23 years later, while the excursion (which I got the rest of the money for later) is only a memory. I still think the Lego was a damn good use for birthday money.
