I've never had that happen to me. Usually when I get into fandoms they're either in the boom stage or already well, well past it and into the 'stable small fandom' stage. I tend to treat all my boom fandoms as temporary homes, something I'm in to enjoy the rush and the joy of an on-going thing with a bunch of new people, and then have the small fandoms for my consistent homes. I mean, there's a new boom fandom every year or so, they're good for that, and the small fandoms past the dwindling stage don't tend to die.

I've been doing this more or less the same way for about eight years now. Hasn't failed me yet.

I've been in 2 fandoms during the boom stage (one of those was X-Files during the 90s and that was like Whoa). I usually just can't take it. It's too much for me. I prefer my fandoms smaller and stable. Even if it means less cute fanart (cause fanart's the first to go).

AYRT

Yeah, I tend to find a smaller section of the boom fandoms to stick to, usually defined by my favourite characters, and try to keep within that. I also tend to consciously avoid drama hotspots. When I get burned out on the boom fandoms, I just move on again. It's probably the reason I do move on from larger fandoms so much, why the boom fandoms are almost always only temporary for me. Once the stress outweighs the joy, I just mosey on out.
