I'm just starting 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. I've heard a lot of good things about it and I'm very excited!

What about you guys?

Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter - The Long War. I liked The Long Earth a lot but I'm not sure about the sequel yet.

I started Dune but then I got swamped with homework, which I'm currently procrastinating on.

Okay, so. I think the book is... well-written in terms of narrative. It has smart narration, I mean to say, and good descriptions. It's easy to read and addictive, and I get why it's famous. The scene-by-scene storytelling is genuine and often moving.

However, I found the main character to be a total Gary Stu. He seemed like the author's fantasy self-insert, who is super awesome at everything. His "flaws" never really hold him back, they just make him more awesome yet.

In fact, none of the characters were particularly interesting, certainly not the love interest.

I know there's a sequel, but I also felt that nothing actually happened in the first book. The ending was really anti-climactic, and there wasn't much of a story that built up and nothing at all resolved itself.

So... in that sense, I think the book is overrated. Well-written, but in terms of characters and story, lacking.

Oh my god, Name of the Wind. I have never read a book that was both so simultaneously bad and good at the same time.

I'm determined to finally read The Hound of the Baskervilles all the way through. I've read a bunch of the adventures but I abandoned Hound partway in and hadn't picked it up again. I've enjoyed the beginning more the second time around, so that's nice.

"Shadow Ops: Breach Zone" by Myke Cole. Military urban fantasy, and it's awesome. Third and (supposedly) final book in the trilogy.

Theoretically both N0S4A2 by Joe Hill and Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks, but I seem to have the attention span of a gnat, of late.

Still not finished with the Honrblower series! I'm midway through Flying Colours.

I find that it's a very belles-lettres kind of literature. It's centered around the personality of the main character and the nerdy gushing about history and ships. Apart from that, there are some nice descriptions and an epic Hornblower&Bush brotp.

Like, it really doesn't have any kind of bigger philosophical message. It just seeks to please the reader (hence some wild romance here and there) while simultaneously educating them.

Which doesn't make it any worse, mind you. I enjoy the thing a lot. And I love it when people write about something they know well. Forester is so adorable in his hopeless nerdiness.

Also, I'm reading Solzhenitsyn's drafts of the last volumes of The Red Wheel. It's a pretty dull piece of writing (just the facts, without even the entertaining Solzhenitsyn-esque language shenanigans), but I'm a completionist, so I couldn't leave it unfinished.

The Stand by Stephen King. It's post-apocalyptic and super long so I'm moving pretty slowly.

Transformers: Exodus. It's astonishingly mediocre with occasional flashes of brilliance. The plot is interesting, but I've read Transformers fanfiction that has better prose.

Oh well. That's what I get for reading a prequel tie-in novel loosely based on an alternate continuity of a silly 80s cartoon.

Gotham Central (woot!) and Don Quixote, for myself.

A few longish fanfics in various fandoms.

The Returned by Jason Mott. I am half way done and it has been underwhelming. But I can't stop reading because I want to find out why people are returning from the dead. Aliens? Magic? Who knows. If it turns out to be *shrug* just because, I am going to kick a kitten.

Does nonfiction count? If so, Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism by Susan Jacoby. I've also read her biography of Robert Ingersoll (The Great Agnostic), and I really like her prose style.

I haven't read much fiction in a while, outside of fanfic. Lately I've mostly been in a mood for familiar authors, so I'll probably wait until one of my favorites puts out their next book.

I'm currently reading my latest comic books. I finished No Witnesses by Ridley Pearson (sp? I'm too lazy to go look right now) just before that. (Decent enough mystery.) I read and enjoyed The Kingkiller Chronicles. Sure, the lead character was a bit of a Gary Stu, but it had some really good passages and storytelling. So enjoy! I hope you like it/them too. :)
