But in the film, she knew he was sentient and did it with malicious intent. The mice are sentient too, and so is the dog, and she knows this. It's not quite the same as hitting a RL cat. It's more like giving a kid a spanking.

Which is not so great a thing to do either, but what of it? Little things like seeing her lose her temper go a long way towards making her a believable character rather than a Purity Sue.
