I...actually agree. I mean, I get in the film he was doing it to be mean but...still.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, she was going to chase him off.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to think she was going to sweep him across the room for a while. A lot of cats absolutely hate that, but it's not harmful.

(And also Lucifer was deliberately being a dick. I know that doesn't excuse animal abuse, if that's what she was aiming for, but really. He knew what he was doing.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it would be one thing if he didn't know what he was doing. But he totally did it on purpose to make her life harder, when her life was already hard enough.

Yeah, it's almost like she lives in an abusive environment and probably thinks that violence is normal. OH WAIT.

(Also, that cat was evi. His name was LUCIFER. He did things to deliberately make her life difficult. And also sweeping a cat away won't really hurt the animal.)

I doubt she would have really hurt him. Even if she did, he was brat so I wouldn't stress over it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had cats who liked being swept with the broom, or being swept across the floor. Or they like to attack it while I'm sweeping. I guess if she was just going to whack him with it, he'd dislike that, but most cats would just run away and wouldn't really get hurt by that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe if this was a more realistic movie I could see your point, but ... he's a cartoon animal with an evil personality. Unlike a real cat, he knew exactly what he was doing and did it to be mean.

In the 1940s and 1950s it was a very common trope to have women batting at cats and mice with brooms. Srsly, watch any Looney Tunes cartoon and roll with it, OP.

She wasn't necessarily going to whack him with it. And if she was, she was probably going to give him a tiny smack. I've shooed my cat with a broom when he was way under this structurally unstable thing and I was worried it would fall on him and he wouldn't come when I called. What a long story, nope I'm still posting it.

If this were a more realistic movie I'd agree, but that cat was clearly doing it to be malicious, and he made sure Cinderella knew he was being malicious.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-02-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But in the film, she knew he was sentient and did it with malicious intent. The mice are sentient too, and so is the dog, and she knows this. It's not quite the same as hitting a RL cat. It's more like giving a kid a spanking.

Which is not so great a thing to do either, but what of it? Little things like seeing her lose her temper go a long way towards making her a believable character rather than a Purity Sue.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)

Erm...it was another time? That's hardly an excuse, but I've heard of people around here where I am stuffing a dog in a trunk and thinking that is a perfectly good way to take them to the vet (DDDDD:). I would be horrified and protest loudly if I ever saw this happen in real life, but the point is...uh, yeah, I rather agree with you. It's kind of horrifying. I wouldn't whack any pet with a broom, no matter how much of a shit it was being.

This reminds me of a similar pet peeve I have. I hate how cats are almost universally villainous in Western animation, to the point where animators seem incapable of drawing a cat that looks like a cat as opposed to a minor demon trying to look like a cat.

Not going to lie, when I was a kid it absolutely bothered me when cats were treated horribly in cartoons and made out to be the villains. I didn't like Cinderella, I didn't like Lady & the tramp and I absolutely detested Tom & Jerry.

It seems silly, but I was a child and I loved my cat so I didn't like seeing even cartoon cats be put through abuse.

Given Cinderella's personality, I doubt that she would've actually hurt Lucifer. Who was a character with motivation and not just acting like an RL cat after all, because this is a Disney movie. And his motivation was to be... evil? Because... his mistress was evil... I guess.

...you do remember half the animals in this movie can talk, right?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-24 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, there's a big difference between hitting an actual cat - or rather, a cat character that is acting like an actual cat - and doing the same towards a 'cat' that is more of a minor villain/antagonist that just so happens to be in a particular animal form.

Also, from what I remember, it was more like swatting him to get him out of the way than actually hitting him (but it's been years, so I may be remembering this wrong).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wait the cat's name is Lucifer? Gonna hand it to the stepmother she picks awesome pet names.

I could be wrong about this, but I think in 1950 people were a lot more casual about things like swatting a housecat with a broom. Clearly Cinderella wasn't going to hit Lucifer *hard.*
