The Tolkien book universe always looked interesting to me, with the backstory, ad the various characters, and the mythology of the world... If I could get into Tolkien's writing style, I would join the fandom so fast, but his writing style and I just don't get along, unfortunately. :/

As a Tolkien book universe fan, I would actually suggest that you jump in anyway if it sounds fun to you. If you have some Tolkien nerd friends, see if they'll explain stuff to you; most of us love doing that (in my experience)
