For an example, I haven't seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other nerdy people are surprised or appalled. That's 144 episodes to go through.

Oh, so I understood it the right way.

I'm with you, OP. Ain't nobody gonna make me watch anything longer than forty eps. Don't feel bad about it!

How did you arrive at 40, if I may ask? Seems kind of arbitrary. For some shows, that's not even two seasons.

In my experience, this is roughly the number of episodes that allows a show to have an integral plotline and to keep all characters IC.

This is why I can make exceptions for screen versions of books (e.g. Poirot).

But it's largely arbitrary, of course.

Gotcha. Just wondering because some shows don't hit their stride until later on.

That's really weird. :/ and stupid.

Honestly, I just marathoned it on Netflix one month when I had a lot of projects to do that didn't require my full attention. Before that, my friend had the DVD set, and she would come over and a couple of us would watch an episode or two a week. But before that, I'd only seen piecemeal and I still called myself a fan.

It's worth checking out an episode or two. Not even the first episodes, sometimes, because, y'know, show finding its feet. But nothing wrong with watching something a bit and deciding you're not in it for the long haul.

Or just not watching something at all.
