Naw, you don't. I'm pretty much a book/video game girl and I can work from that. I mean, there are going to be some dicks who aren't okay with it - but most people will be okay with it.

But it *does* get really annoying when people act shocked and horrified when they find out you don't watch much tv/aren't into that as much as you are books/whatever else.

Solution: read those things if you like them and if anyone's an ass about how you don't know enough background information, tell them to shove it up their ass.

I mean, I like knowing that background information, but that's because I think it's cool and interesting. If you don't find it cool and interesting there's no reason to care about it, I don't think.

I can agree with that - everything except *all* TV shows (I don't think there's a hardcore ship war between Modern Family viewers, or some silly sitcom).

To be fair, some books come with a lot of information and nerd potential as well: LOTR and the Silmarillion, Les Mis, A Song of Ice and Fire...

But if background info and meta are not your thing then it's fine, and anyone who acts superior because they wrote a 20 paragraphs tumblr post about whether or not Tolkien elves grow arse hair is a goddamn idiot.

I don't like huge TV shows (I won't watch anything longer than 40 episodes, period) and big franchises where different canons are closely related to one another.

Not because I'm expected to know everything about the canons (given that the original universe is to my liking, this isn't a problem), but because the canons melt together and mix in all sorts of weird ways, creating situations where a character can be both IC and self-contradictory. And I don't really want my canons mixing like that.

Eyein' u so hard, Star Wars. U r the worst.

This does create some problems. Everyone around is all about huge TV shows/giant franchises. I find that fandom is mostly concentrating on this sort of stuff, probably because giant never-ending things result in long-living, stable fanbases. Fandom is definitely not big on books (my primary interest) or movies. Siiigh.

Hahah. No. I am in fandoms (as in fandoms as I can be) of shows I have never watched. The biggest being Game of Thrones. I don't watch the show or read the books but I ship Jaime/Brienne like burning. I read fic about them and reblog posts about them.

I think you should stop worrying what people think tbh. You don't have to admit to not knowing everything, just talk about what you like and are interested in. You can read fic, write fic, check out communities or just look at all the pretty gifs, but you seriously don't have to prove yourself. Anyone who thinks you should can fuck off.

Or you don't have to touch the fandoms at all. Whatever works for you.

That's why I tell my family I'm not a geek. I only like specific shit. I think you need to like all the things to get your geek badge (and wear that thing with pride).

Since when is TV nerdy?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, really, unless you mean sci fi and stuff... it's "cool" to watch TV. I'm a total nerd, btw, and I still watch non-sci fi TV, I'm just saying I don't think watching a lot of Glee makes you a nerd at all.

A lot of nerds hate fandom. A lot of fandomers are only really in one or two, regardless of the format.

I actually don't care for most TV fandoms. They come across as shallow and overly involved with the actors and actresses. I got so bored with Heroes fandom because it felt like all anyone wanted to do was go on about how hot Zach Quinto was. Whereas I feel like book fandoms tend to focus on plot and character discussion way more.

For an example, I haven't seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other nerdy people are surprised or appalled. That's 144 episodes to go through.

I can understand being intimidated by comic and some game fandoms, but I've never heard of a TV show fandom that has a lot of 'need to know' stuff, you learn most of it by watching the show after all.

Don't worry too much about it, OP. I think that's a normal geek/nerd approach, to focus on a couple of media and dismiss the overwhelming one or the formats you can't get into. I have friends who won't touch games or comics or certain TV shows either, and no one has come to revoke their geek license. Me, I'm not too big on movies, neither can I watch long shows and most live action TV in general. I lose interest and there tends to be a decrease in quality if they go for too long.

I've seen people who only read/watch/play one comic/show/game of a company/genre/series, don't give a fuck, and they just stick with what they know or check the wikis. They still consider themselves a geek and participate in fandoms to an extend. After all, no one has the money or access to every comic with x character or every console for a long game series. So there's not a wrong way to do this, and not wanting to watch fricking Buffy or get into any cult icon doesn't make you inferior.

tl;dr: YOU ARE STILL IN THE ~NERD SPHERE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've only been in video game fandoms, and you don't have to know every obscure detail to join the fandom. I'm sorry you feel that way, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way in terms of fandom. Like I love the Zelda games and lore, but I don't have the money to buy all of them, so I've only played a few. The only game series I've played in its entirety is Might and Magic, and I don't know if there's much of a fandom for it, especially now.

For non-serial games, though, I think people are more understanding. Most fans won't give you shit if you haven't read every tie-in novel and creator interview. Also, you don't have to be active in fandom to be a fan of something.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, like what you like.

And movies and books have their own fandoms, no "nerd sphere" required.

And this is coming from someone who's been in fandoms for video games, anime, soap operas, movies and books.

As someone who is currently in a fandom famous for it's long history of nerds who have read every book... I don't want to be in the nerd part of the fandom because it's full of elitist pricks!

Context: I am currently in the Hobbit fandom, which is also a part of the greater LotR fandom. There's the constant issue of book purist fans who wish the movies were exactly like the books, fans who know chapter and verse of The History of Middle Earth (a collection of 12 books of Tolkiens various notes and such), the fans who may not consider themselves book purists but still hate the movies, fans who have never read the books and only became fans because they watched the movies, and fans who read the books and still liked the movies.

Not everyone is dedicated enough to go read HoME and such. They can still be in the fandom, I just advise they have a link to one of the wikis to do research if they're starting to go into First Age stuff (which can be very damn easy if you're looking into the background of Elves).

Getting into the Big Two can be...involved. It's easier now, with wikipedia and fandom communities and all, but I wouldn't blame someone for just not wanting to bother. If I may, some easy-to-get-into stories with breathing room and no outside reading required?

Thor: The Mighty Avenger -- it's two very small trades, 8 issues in total, that is completely separate from any other continuity. It stands alone completely as the story of Thor's origin and his romance with Jane. The writing is great, the art is lovely and makes me smile, and the characters are fun. The romance is pretty sweet and laid on in just the right doses.

Transmetropolitan--this isn't even remotely sweet, except for when it is. But it is a fantastic, fun, horrible, relevant story that...y'know, explaining it just doesn't work. It's strange and weird and about a terrible world inhabited by terrible people, and the protagonists is a terrible person, only he's driven by the need to tell the Truth on a grand scale, and there are actually really great female characters in this, which surprised me, but there they are. It pulls no punches and is related to nothing but itself, and it's a contained, finished story (maybe ten trades, maybe less?) that you can probably pick up from your library.

Bone -- another completed story, fantasy with funny animal elements. Widely considered a classic because it is. Features stupid stupid rate creatures.

Also: Fables, Anya's Ghost, Rapunzel's Revenge, and Hereville. Honorable mention goes to the current Hawkeye comic, which isn't completely a stand-alone, but can be read knowing nothing more than: "This guy's name is Hawkeye, his schtick is a bow and arrow, his day job is being a superhero."
