My love for McKay (SGA) started to turn to annoyance after awhile mainly due to the loudest part of fandom and how they insisted he was perfect and could do no wrong. It wasn't all of fandom, but it was often enough that it ruined the character a bit.

Yeah. I actually really like McKay (still do) but the way his fangirls/fanboys act like *This* or *That* (the "lemon incident") is an affront to him is crazy. He's not perfect. He's loud and arrogant and he's a bit of an ass but, ultimately, I like him despite it.

For me it wasn't fandom but the writers who ruined McKay. He had some decent character growth but then at some point turned into their self insert Gary Stu.

The writers definitely ruined Sheppard for me. I can see what you're saying about McKay too, but I think fandom got to me first so by the end I just couldn't stand to look at either of their faces.
