What characters/ships did you love until fandom ruined it for you?

The West Wing fandom put me off my adoration of Josh/Donna with the fans' obsessive focus on the ship and elevation of the importance of the ship above, you know, trivial background plot elements like ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS and RUNNING THE COUNTRY and AWESOME POLITICAL CONFLICTS.

However, I've since cycled back to loving them again. <3

Sherlock. And I've become intolerant to Cumberbatch's face too (thanks tumblr).

Hannibal was starting to get on my nerves too, but lately I see less of it around.

I hope the over-exposition to Tom Hiddleston's face will not have the same effect on the long run. I like Tom Hiddleston's face.

oh thank you for reminding me. I hate every character ever played by Hiddleston. Tumblr did this to me.

Oddly, I have nothing against Cumberbatch!Sherlock and even Cumberbatch!Smaug. Everything else Cumberbatch annoys me, though.

But Hiddleston is the worst.

/nothing personal, just tumblr influence.

I really like both Sherlock and Hannibal, and so I intentionally avoid the fandoms (especially the Tumblr incarnations of those fandoms). I just want to watch a good show and not be reminded of whatever crazy is going on on the internet.

I really like Hiddleston's portrayal of Henry V in The Hollow Crown, but everywhere I look online is plastered with his face and if I never see or hear him again I won't mind.

Mass Effect fandom has basically put me off all of the main romances. There's still ones I really like in-game, but the fanbases are like blech, no thanks. It's a combination of stupid petty drama and a lot of fic that I find genuinely boring.

So now I only ship squadmates with each other. And NPCs with each other. and squadmates with NPCs... all rarepairs but still more fun than getting caught up in the most pointless shipping wars ever (I mean, seriously, when everyone's OTP is canon, what is the point?)

Levi/Erwin and Jean/Marco from the Shingeki no Kyojin fandom

This, and Armin in general. Oh god, Armin stans.

Definately agree with the latter. Not only do they worship co-dependence as 'romantic' and 'tragic' but goddamn those fucking AUs sometimes.

Dean Winchester. I actually liked him best in the first few seasons but rubbing elbows with the fandom combined with the decline of the show put me off. I was still pretty "Meh" about it then but the obnoxious comments on (of all things) the AfterElton slash poll really killed any positive feelings I had and got me hating the mere mention of Dean Winchester or Destiel.

Derek Hale. I didn't see it but I enjoyed a couple Sterek fics, too. Same thing as above (even the AfterElton thing).

I was friends with Dean fangirls, and my impression was that they missed the entire point of the show by shipping him with Sam. So I never watched it.

There are some characters I felt casually dislike for but when I found out they were the fandom darling, it really intensified my feelings of dislike.

I used to be a fan of Rukia in Bleach and not-a-fan-but-alright-with Ichi/Ruki, but fandom (at least where I am/was) absolutely IDOLIZED her and Ichi/Ruki oversaturates everything. She just gets endless praise and half the time when I went looking for gen fanart of Ichigo it all ends up being Ichi/Ruki.

Now I just can't enjoy her appearances in new chapters because I know no one is going to talk about anything other than how awesome she is so I read more quickly through any panel she's in, and I've started looking for Bleach art less because I'm just getting so tired of seeing all the Ichi/Ruki fanart, manips and such. I just want to find fanart of Ichigo in his new outfit without any shipping. :(

+1

I got seriously resentful of her, although she was my favourite character while watching/reading. Doesn't help that I actually genuinely dislike Ichigo.

The only thing fandom ruins for me is fandom. Doesn't do jackshit to the characters, ships, or source I enjoy.

Same here. I've had a couple of fandom falling outs with people, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying ships, characters or the source material in general.

This. I don't let other people ruin things that I like.

I fell out of liking Sherlock due to Moff and the fandom.

Akemi Homura and Homura/Madoka.

Well, I never felt very strongly about HomuMado, but I at least shipped it.

My love for McKay (SGA) started to turn to annoyance after awhile mainly due to the loudest part of fandom and how they insisted he was perfect and could do no wrong. It wasn't all of fandom, but it was often enough that it ruined the character a bit.

Five minutes in Teen Wolf fandom makes this white-hot rage towards Stiles start simmering in my gut. And I love that dumbass.

I stay the fuck out of that fandom.

The Carol love on the Walking Dead is getting on my nerves. I like her and appreciate her character growth, but the stanning going on for her is getting to ridiculous levels to the point of obnoxiousness.

The most recent problem I'm having is that people absolutely refuse to believe she killed those people because they want to think Carol is this perfect badass. I actually would like the show to take Carol down a darker path, and I really wouldn't be opposed to her going crazy (it's a zombie apocalypse show, people are going to break sometimes.)

I used to love Darcy Lewis, back when she was a really minor character even in fandom. As a political science student with a strong interest yet general lack of understanding in complex and abstract sciences like quantum physics, and one who at least has a reputation or knack for perception and analysis, I really identified with her.

She became the fandom hipster bicycle. :(

Now, I tend to not read anything with her as the main character unless it's gen or porn, or crack-fic/not meant to be taken seriously. I still love her as a support character, but fandom ruined her as a main character for me.

Which makes the fact I'm writing porn with her as the central figure in it all the more ironic.
