I'm sure she will conform to your tastes any day now.

You know one can dislike something without expecting it to conform to their tastes.

I hope this is not a too shocking revelation to you. If it is: welcome to your new improved life!

this can be resolved by simply listening to the video and not actually watching it

I came here to say this.

It bothers me too but I think she's cute (not just her looks, in general) so I let it go. But still the dancer in me looks at the moves and thinks about how much better it could be.

I have a lot of trouble watching fandom people do stuff because it usually makes me cringe.

I think my niece likes her. The name sounds kind of familiar.

The jumpy thing is one of her gimmicks. Also, she's not even playing when she's doing it.

Those guys are magic

They just made my water disappear from my bottle and reappear all over my screen and chest.

I get huge second-hand embarrassment from watching her. I think she's mega-talented, and a nice person, but the lurching about and grinning manically at the camera is just too much.

I don't expect her to change, or conform, or whatever, so hold your bile Lindsey stanners. I just think she looks ridiculous. Though I respect her enthusiasm.

I've only seen her colab with Pentatonix on Radioactive so I cant really say I know much about her style.

But dancing/moving around while playing the violin is nothing new. Case in point, the astounding Máiréad Nesbitt:

I honestly felt really bad for feeling this because she seems like the sweetest girl ever. So yeah, I just listen and not watch instead.

Haha, I was just thinking about this today.

Ultimately though, I can't really criticize since I look like a drunken giraffe whenever I attempt anything artistically physical so I give her props for just going out and owning it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
The fiddling and the dancing are fine. But is there now a contractual obligation that all female singers be homogenized to the same uniform standards? Yuck. Good singers don't have to be technically perfect.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope she never stands in place while playing the violin. I love watching her dance, it's so lively and adorable, it would be a waste if she stood in place. Lindsey Stirling ♥ I think my favorite original of hers is Transcendence, I love the video, her dancing, and the song. Favorite cover is definitely Skyrim.

But that's kind of her thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand it bugging you and yeah she only has a very limited number of moves so if you watch too many vids it gets a little annoying and repetetive, but...that's her whole gimmick. The whole dancing-while-playing performance. That's the whole point of her 'style'.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more bothered by the fact that she's Mormon.

As a classically trained musician (god, that sounds uber-snobby but it's true) it bothers me too. I like her music but think her videos are ridiculous.

I like her music but have never seen her videos. I almost never watch music videos anyway. I suspect I'm not missing much.

Her dancing is cute

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously guys. Most everyone commenting has this idea that people who don't like her act are anti-quirky and inventive. I think she's really very talented and I like her music, but I avoid her videos because she's goofy and over-the-top in this really embarrassing way that I just don't like. It's fine that you all like her, but that I don't isn't because I prefer my musicians frowning in formal wear. I get that she has an act, and that cavorting about and looking reaaaalllly happy is that act. I understand that she is different and special. I just think it looks stupid. And so I enjoy her music, and not her dance moves.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I pulled up a bit of her stuff and honestly, the songs I heard sounded more like fiddle than violin, in which case the dancing-while-playing is not "posing," it's just the way a lot of fiddlers connect.

Case in point, this old clip from a film about Cape Breton fiddlers, showing Natalie MacMaster stepdancing while fiddling:

http://youtu.be/HLz7gCddLW0

Which is always one of my favourite elements of her shows!

I personally like a more traditional dance-hall fiddle but Lindsey is pretty darned good, too.

Dancing while playing violin does look a bit funny. I think it's because the violin forces the musician to hold the top part of their body at least semi-rigid. That said, it's not really unusual, and if it gets people to notice her, I say well done.
