[American Horror Story]

I don't want to accuse anyone of anything, but it's kind of suspicious that people loved her but at the same time most of them thought that LaLaurie was a horrible human being that deserved to rot in hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, once a villain is good-looking you always get people trying to woobify them.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This thank you! As someone who loves history, her portrayal on that show annoyed me too. It's like depicting Martin Luther King Jr. as a serial rapist who never really wanted racial equality.

But from what I've seen, it's mostly SJWs on tumblr that love her portrayal to death and think it's flawless.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Those people love any poc woman to death and will think she can do no wrong. A character could basically be a black female Hitler and they'd still praise her as ~flawlessomgsoperfect~.

I know ONTD stanned the hell out of her.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's in part because the actress is so attractive. I could get wanting to collect pictures & gifs of her because she's so pretty.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It would not have been PC to do otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of figured that people decided to love her because of her historical counterpart? Because the show decided to take her and portray her as an unrepentant serial killer, so her fans chose to love her anyway as a means of spiting whoever was dumb enough to make that call.

Not that I'm really in the fandom, but that's just kind of the vibe I've gotten from what I've seen of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't ditching the show have been a better way to spite them?

Forcing fannishness on a character seems like the shittiest way of telling the world you don't like the writer's choices in creating the character.

I was really bothered!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But I don't watch the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, a lot of the season was her being fabulous and vengeful against Lalaurie (who was terrible!), and then we didn't find out about the baby thing until like one or two episodes were left in the season.

I think it comes down to liking the character, who is different from the real person and people realizing that not only are they watching fiction, but suspend-your-disbelief fiction. When I watch a more serious work like Schindler's List, I expect a reasonably realistic approximation of the man & his actions (not perfect, but not outlandish). When I watch American Horror Story and it's about people actually having magical powers, I'm really not expecting an accurate portrayal of any historical figure, be it Laveau or LaLaurie. I expected camp and witches and a bit of awesome acting because of Basset, Bates, & Lange and that's what I got.

Not to mention, a lot of people may not even know she and LaLaurie were real people. I'd never heard of either until some show where they talked about how Nicholas Cage had owned LaLaurie's house and they spent a little time on New Orleans of that era and what exactly that meant.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Every corner of fandom I was in pretty heavily criticized the show for taking a legit historical figure and making her a bad person? And I spend a shitton of time on Tumblr reading what some people might call SJW blogs. Like it's possible to love Angela Bassett's portrayal but still criticize the show for making Laveau "evil". I know I do, because her epic scenery chewing was great.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I find it funny how a lot of the people who stan her are the first to complain about the Pocahontas movie, when the portrayal of Marie in AHS is also so incredibly at odds to what she was like irl.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
What frustrates me the most is that they could have portrayed Marie Laveau in this show without disrespecting the real historical counterpart. They could have had a backstory where Marie made a deal with Papa Legba to ensure that all slaves in the United States were granted freedom in exchange to do Papa Legba's bidding on earth for all eternity. Or something like that. No sacrificing babies. No hating whites who believed in equality. No torturing and killing people out of revenge. Just something that simple that the real Marie might have actually done if she had the power to.

They could have given her character development here in the fact that the cruelty and injustice has made her weary, where when Coven starts all she wants to do is rest. That way she could have given insight about Papa Legba (which might have let Coven show more supernatural beings) and served as a voice of reason and compassion like how the show depicted Cordelia. They could have even based the entire show on Marie and how Marie is the strongest Supreme and needs someone to take her place, but she has to choose someone responsible enough to handle it. She could have also been a counterpart to Fiona's corruption, where the girls admitted into Fiona's school are eventually given a choice to leave and join Marie.

I know these ideas aren't all great. But there's so much they could have done with her that it's disappointing.

I don't think the "historical" characters are meant to be taken very seriously outside of fictionalized spins for the setting.

Besides, one of the more interesting things in AHS is the darker *and* humanizing angle they give to every character. I don't think we are meant to root for anybody in particular, or judge them, for that matter. It's a "make your own conclusions" approach, I think. I suppose one of the thrilling things about the show is how it manages to make a bunch of horrible people seem interesting and rather human, because they're just that, people. It would have stood out to treat Laveau otherwise.

...I think I might be the only person here who's really rather fond of LaLaurie.

A lot of people were upset about this and the woobification of LaLaurie

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
IRL Marie Laveau wasn't a pact-making baby-murderess, but she wasn't a very good person either. Comparing her to Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks is an insult. In most circles of Hoodoo and Voodoo, she's regarded as a charlatan and an extortionist that conned whites out of their money.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand why people who are easily offended would watch this show.
