I don't think the "historical" characters are meant to be taken very seriously outside of fictionalized spins for the setting.

Besides, one of the more interesting things in AHS is the darker *and* humanizing angle they give to every character. I don't think we are meant to root for anybody in particular, or judge them, for that matter. It's a "make your own conclusions" approach, I think. I suppose one of the thrilling things about the show is how it manages to make a bunch of horrible people seem interesting and rather human, because they're just that, people. It would have stood out to treat Laveau otherwise.

...I think I might be the only person here who's really rather fond of LaLaurie.

When you describe it like this, it sounds like it might be something I should watch. I have a weakness for characters that are horrible but fascinating.

And now I want to read Hygiene and the Assassin again. That book gives me such a feeling of disgusted fascination.

No kidding? I love Hygiene and the Assassin. (:

In this series particularly, that's something Jessica Lange does wonderfully. She always starts off playing an awful person, and then slowly turns very compelling, showing her weaknesses and depths. It's true for most characters, all of them slide in shades of grey.

I'm partial to these kinds of characters too. I deal a lot with this side of people in my profession though, so there may be some bias there. A lot of people see the series as gratuitous instead-- I guess both things aren't mutually exclusive.
