...and to dress up as our favourite movie characters.

lots of people dressed up. (I did for the fun of it, knowing I wouldn't be recognized.) there was a huge crowd on the quad at 3pm. so what happened then? a whole lot of nothing. the rep started off by telling us that they wouldn't even be filming until 415, and that if our costumes weren't ostentatious, then we would probably be ignored. I mean yeah common sense, but it was pretty rude the way she said it in my opinion. so apparently they just went through the crowd for that hour and fifteen minutes, then eventually ellen was essentially skyping the quad, and the winner of the costume contest gets to go to the next taping of her show. I left before any of this happened, as did most of the original crowd, because it was about 20-25 degrees (F) and there was still snow on the quad, soaking everyone's feet.

tl;dr: if ellen tweets your college about a "big surprise", it might not even be anything cool.

anyone else have any cool stories lately? or tales of disappointment?

Someone I follow said this was happening at her school too (but on Friday? Somewhere in Illinois). That doesn't surprise me on a TV studio standpoint, but it's a bummer.

Is there any possibility this was a prank or a miscommunication on the TV station's part? (I think I just want to give Ellen Degeneres some credit.) Either way, it was lousy of them.

Okay, googled it and apparently it was a real thing... and you were not the only person with complaints.

yeah...people are pretty disappointed. a lot of people were saying they felt dumb for waiting around in their costumes for nothing.

Well, I can think of one weird disappointment - Stonehenge. This isn't lack of gratitude at all - I wouldn't trade having been able to go for anything, because it's Stonehenge and intellectually that means something to me. But I think I expected to be touched spiritually or something, when in truth, it was bitter cold and we couldn't get up close. :( Not the deep, profound moment I'd been hoping for. I've heard it was like that when you could actually get closer.

I once saw a satyr sitting on one of the stones at Stonehenge -- honestly, he looked just like Nijinsky in his L'apres-midi d'un faune costume -- and I looked around to see if anyone else had noticed him, but when I looked back he'd turned into a policeman.

I later used the experience in a fanfic...

Oooh, Nijinsky, in that costume.....

And they were very different experiences. They had very different feels to them. The first time, it felt weirdly still, almost eerie. The second time I felt very detached. The distance does make a difference.

That's what I've heard - even an older friend warned me before I went that it wouldn't be the same thing.

The one time I went, when I was about fourteen, I was lucky enough to get into one of the tours that went inside the circle. It must've been a weekday, and it was morning and our small group was there alone. It was foggy, quiet, beautiful, and immensely spiritual. It was everything I was hoping it to be.

Now I am so glad I didn't see it from afar, or in a day with bad weather or something.

When I went there were billions of tiny spiders and it was windy so they got blown off the fence they were climbing on and all over me like ants.

The grass was actually cool to look at because it was covered in these strands of web that were shiny. I ended up getting some good photos, but overall, I was cold and covered in spiders.

disappointing indeed!! I've never been myself, but it sounds so amazing..

I feel so lucky that I got to see Stonehenge when you could still walk around the stones and touch them. We were visiting my dad in Paris that Christmas and I begged him to take us to Stonehenge for the Solstice. My brother thought I was being stupid, but later told me that going there was one of the best experiences of his life. It was cold, gray, and damp and it just felt eerily wonderful to be out there with these stones that had been there for thousands of years. Oddly, I wasn't thinking of Neolithic people or Druids when we were there -- I kept remembering that scene in Tess of the D'Urbevilles. Definitely something I'll never forget.

I wonder about that. there were quite a few people tweeting nice things because they wanted to get noticed. last time I checked her twitter, it seemed like she thought everything had been lovely.

Taking creative writing classes taught by instructors who really just want you to write what they would read or write.

#1 reason I stopped being an English major.

My creative writing prof turned out to be

1) A professor emeritus of architecture, not writing or even lit
2) Vanity published
3) Incapable of spelling the word 'rhyme'

So that experience sucked.

and that's why i don't take creative writing classes anymore

there's so much information on the internet at the moment that you can almost teach yourself, as long as you've got a good editor & some willing beta readers.

yikes. I haven't had that experience specifically, but I've definitely been in classes that sounded mind-blowingly awesome that turned out to be boring or pointless.

I'm sorry that happened to you but I'm not surprised, I've found that if you want to be involved with anything having to do with tv then you need to be prepared to wait around all day and possibly get screwed over, and even if you don't get screwed over you need to count on them being extremely, extremely late.

This is especially true for special events or filming where they are not in their normal studio. Most talk shows and things that are in their normal studio have it down to a science (though you still need to wait for quite a while) but when they leave their studio it's like they've lost their ability to do anything.

I guess so, and I'll know that for the future now. maybe my hopes were just too high as a small-town kid from a small state. I never thought I would get to possibly be a part of ellen's show (even just as some kid screaming in the crowd).
