What's the point in investing tons of energy writing plotty conspiracy fix when we don't know most of the plot and there's a high chance of it all getting jossed next chapter?

SA. Because it's fun :D . Okay, I might just like deconstruction fics a bit too much. Anyways, SnK has lots of potential.

True, it is fun... But I know that I would love to AU the he'll out of it and all, but don't want to invest energy since I have no idea what will happen anyway. I mean, hell,I was headcanoning a coup for ages and look what's happening. Better I hadn't tried to write that fic.

But just because it's the same concept doesn't mean it'll have the exact same story and can still be good on it's own merits. Heck, Isayama isn't really the greatest storyteller, you could probably do an even better job than the canon.

I get you, I guess I'm just really anal about wanting to use canon elements even when I AU. Investing a ton in making up a divergent story when so much plot is still in the air bugs me, because I like writing in canon. That's why so far I've stuck to writing canon-era oneshots, and the occasional backstory.
I do have one plotty gen AU, but that mirrors parts of canon plot we've seen so far and I'm trying to leave some of the stuff we don't know at least partially open so I might be able to keep it (somewhat) reflecting canon...

If I'm still in the fandom when we know more, perhaps I'll dig my teeth into a proper canon-divergence fic

*nods* I understand completely. In my case I'm having problems with characterization, because we still don't know so much about certain characters that I can't be sure that I'm writing them properly.

I hope you are still in the fandom, anon, because I'd love a good canon-divergence story; they're one of my favorite kinds of fic.

yeah, characterization is tough, but tbh this series isn't particularly heavy on characterization at all. Since there are entire chapters devoted to fighting and nothing happening and stuff, so it's kind of hard to get a handle on them sometimes...

Tbh I don't get this kind of thinking? Isn't fanfiction for exploring the unexplored? I read fic in open canons and there have been some really fantastic stuff that was later paralleled in canon and it was pretty cool.

Yeah, I'm struggling with this too - it's hard to write about these characters when you're still not sure about their characterizations and motivations; I'm looking at you, Annie.

But regardless I'd still rather read a well-written but ultimately non-canon story than the rest of the stupid fluff this fandom makes.
