Re: Can someone explain... UK health costs...

Dental care is covered until you're 16 in the UK, or 18 if you remain in full time education. Eyesight tests are also free in that age range, and they get automatic help towards glasses. If you get an eye infection, then that's covered by other parts of the NHS.

I feel your pain with the wisdom teeth. Had to have my bottom right out a few months back, due to it being rotted pretty far down. My bottom left is probably impacted, but the emergency dentist couldn't confirm with an x-ray due to the gum infection in that part of my mouth being so severe I could barely open wide enough for her to get a look. When I went for a regular dentist appointment, she couldn't do anything because I had a cold sore and there was too much risk of spreading it to another part of my face.

We pay 25% from the year you turn 19 until the year you turn 21 or something along those lines for dental. Going to the eye doctor* is covered by the state at all ages, so if have to go to him/her to get your prescription your glasses are covered until you turn 18, but not after.

Yeah, it sucks doesn't it. Oh? that is a lot worse than what happened to me, half my wisdom tooth just broke off during Christmas dinner, but no pain or anything, but when I went to the dentist she filed it off and put on a temporary filling over my now exposed nerve until I can get to the specialist to get it removed, and she said they would probably remove the rest of them at the same time as I would most likely have issues with them all.

*The specialist that your GP sends you to and are equipped to deal with eye sickness and damages not the ones that usually works in the same place you buy glasses.

Eye doctors are the same here, covered by the NHS, but I don't think they can do prescriptions for glasses/contact lenses. I've only been there once though, and it was as a referral from the emergency department rather than my GP. Spent far too long wandering around the hospital that day because no one considered that maybe the extremely photosensitive girl whose glasses are hooked on her jacket because her face is swollen might need help navigating... and avoiding people... chairs... cleaning carts... walls.

Prescription is probably not the correct word? The thingy that says what kind of glasses you need, if they are made by the eye doctor you get your glasses for free until you turn 18. I think you might have to apply somehow, but I didn't pay much attention to that as a child. I went every year from the age of 4 until I a couple of years ago, when I was told I didn't need to anymore if nothing felt wrong. The damn eye drops she put in my eyes every other year was hell, nicest doctor I've ever had tho.

Oh wow, that is awful! But I guess your medical personnel are like ours, overworked and underpaid? So one can almost excuse them, even if that isn't something that should have happened.
