Re: Self Defence Classes

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-02-25 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
I did aikido and a women's self defense course that were both part of our school curriculum as a teenager. The self defense course was purely focused on landing a single, damaging hit (to the eyes, groin, or instep) and then running away, or breaking a hold and running away. It wasn't meant to teach you how to "fight", per se. I've (thankfully) never had to use it, but I know one of the girls in our class did when a guy tried to rape her while she was jogging - she broke his instep just like they taught us, ran, and called the cops. He was still hobbling off the jogging trail when they picked him up.

The only time in my entire life I've been in real danger from a criminal it was playing football of all things that helped me. Some dude tried to mug me, so I faked one way and ran the other, forcing him to have to spin around to try to catch me, so I had a good healthy headstart to make it to a place where there were other people around and call for help. As soon as I caught other bystanders' attention, he backed off. In retrospect I should have just given him my stupid mp3 player, but it was a limited edition and all I could think about was how pissed off I'd be at myself if I gave it to some asshole for threatening me -_-
