I'll expand in a bit, but sef defence classess invariably range from useless to activley dangerous. The rare exception is exactly that. And you will have cnsiderabe difficulty knowing if it's that rare exception.

Not a term I'm familiar with.
Drive-by acronym dictionary!
Re: Self Defence Classes
At best, you might learn to recognize when it's a good time to run away. At worst, you'll decide not to run away from something when you really should have.

every now and then this kind of thing will spare you an assault and might save your life but you also have to understand that if you mess up in the heat of the moment or if it straight up doesn't work on the person attacking you, it could backfire to the point where it could get you killed
at the same time, going into situations like that, you don't know what the outcome is gonna be and worst case scenario your attacker is already planning to hurt/kill you, so knowing some self defense i think is always beneficial. i got attacked a handful of years back in a parking lot, still no clue what the dude wanted but i was able to push him off and some other guy in the lot came to help. if i had been alone i think i would have been ok but then again i'm not helpless or panicky. had i not known how to break from his hold, form a proper fist/~fighting stance~, etc. then who knows what would have happened but i have a feeling it would have been a lot worse than me walking away fine
i'd suggest looking for some kind of instruction that goes beyond techniques that revolve around fighting back. those are handy if you know what you're doing and can manage to keep a level head when you're suddenly grabbed at random. but i think it'd be worth your while to look into learning when fighting back is and isn't a risk worth taking, because in some situations it will make things worse. ie. if a dude tries mugging you and you're like oh i'm gonna try to wrestle his knife away, what happens if you fuck up?? now he's got your money and he prob stabbed u for spookin him
most of that is just basic common sense but people generally aren't above freaking the fuck out when they're thrust into dangerous situations without warning. it's one thing when a cop is showing you how to break from his hold. it's another entirely when it's a legit attack and you can't afford to mess up, you feel me
so long story short i say it's worth it, but there's more to defending yourself then just punching ppl and breaking away from them and the other basic stuff you tend to be taught in self defense classes so consider educating yourself in those areas as well. it could be really useful someday
Re: Self Defence Classes
In short, if the emphasis is on "how to get away", it's probably not bad, but if it's about "fighting back", then yeah, not worth it, because in real life that's not going to help you. Knowing how to disarm someone holding a knife to your neck is a lot more useful than knowing how to use your keys as a knife. Unfortunately, a lot of self-defense classes - especially the kind geared towards women - focus on the latter, when the useful thing would be to focus on the former.
I will comment, however, that if you want to learn martial arts and/or get in a good work-out as well as self-defense, go for Tae Kwon Do. From what I've heard and a bit of my own experience*, tae kwon do centers usually place a lot more emphasis on the athletic side of martial arts, but also often teach things like disarming an opponent with a knife or a gun (and in my experience - and seconding Tae Kwon Do anon above - they actually make a point to differentiate between the two). The reason why I suggest it is because, along with being a great work out, the kind of muscles/body power that would be most useful in disarmament methods are the kinds that will build-up from tae kwon do exercise. If you go this route, look for the ones that don't try and advertise/play on their Korean-ness or exoticism or whatever - the "American-ized"/"westernized" ones may seem a little more boring, but they are more practical about martial arts as a sport versus a method of self defense.
* = Tae Kwon Do is the only one I ever formally took, but I also learned karate and kung-fu informally and with a lot of stories about how the formal education went. In short, kung-fu will become useful as a self-defense method in about a decade of hard practice, whereas karate seems to have a bad reputation of doing little to counter over-confidence in students. But this is all several-years-old heresay, so I may be wrong about this.
Re: Self Defence Classes
The only time in my entire life I've been in real danger from a criminal it was playing football of all things that helped me. Some dude tried to mug me, so I faked one way and ran the other, forcing him to have to spin around to try to catch me, so I had a good healthy headstart to make it to a place where there were other people around and call for help. As soon as I caught other bystanders' attention, he backed off. In retrospect I should have just given him my stupid mp3 player, but it was a limited edition and all I could think about was how pissed off I'd be at myself if I gave it to some asshole for threatening me -_-
