I think it would probably be a lot less stupid and a lot more interesting if the actors weren't always the same.

This. Fancasting for "Good Omens" is whatever white dude slash ship is currently the most popular.

Bingo. If the person fancasting would take more than five minutes to think, "Could this actor, given his filmography, pull this character off" I think we would have more interesting and sound fancasting lists.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I generally agree and I'm so sick of seeing the same actors over and over again. But at the same time, there are a couple of actors I could see in several roles from books I like. Some actors are just incredibly versatile. Or they're just the perfect "type" for something and so I imagine them playing different characters that somehow fit the type. Some actors look so great in period/fantasy stuff that I want them to be in every fantasy movie ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Right? It's always the same list of actors, and it's just boring and predictable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Amen to that. A fun way to break that habit is to do time periods. That also stops teenagers from playing almost entirely, which tends to raise the level of play.

For example, let's say you've finally gotten approval to make (if we must) Good Omens, but due to a surprisingly complex union contract, you have to make it in 1968.

Aziraphale: Peter O'Toole
Crowley: Michael Caine
Newt: David Hemmings
Anathema: Vanessa Redgrave
Adam: Kurt Russell

For advanced play, cast various different versions of the same stories, as filtered through the bad creative habits of different eras. For example, remember the godawful musical version of Good Omens from the 50s, the one with (respectively) Gene Kelly, Marlon Brando, Van Johnson, Cyd Charisse, and Dean Stockwell? That was just a bad idea.

Likewise, I assume everyone remembers the cast from the misbegotten mid-80s attempt to remake Good Omens as an action-comedy blockbuster, too? Mel Gibson's Crowley was a nightmare of hairspray and smarm, and the less said about Madonna's take on Anathema Device, the better.

Yeah and most of the time, they don't actually fit the characters. It's just actors who are hot right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
yep

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-02-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of a hilarious joke fancast for Attack on Titan I saw the other day. Some people were actually taking it seriously... even though one of the actors was a bagel.

I think I may have laughed at that harder than I should.

Beneduck Cumberbatch.

I don't think Benedict is suited to play the role of a duck. He is missing the grand duck beak. His face is too flat to truly capture the regal and proud shape of a duck's face. Perhaps, fancasting him as a lizard would have been a better choice for this secret.

I might dislike it less if people didn't cast Benedict Cumberbatch as literally everyone.

I don't really get the point of them but if it makes people happy then whatever, right? I let them have their fun an avoid it.

Unless it's Chris Evans

That man could play every single character in any movie and I'd go see it.

Not when heads are getting pasted onto rubber duckies, it's not! That's sheer BRILLIANCE is what that is!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
In addition to what other commenters said about always casting the same people I'd find it much less annoying if people didn't seem so masturbatory about how diverse their fancastings are.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
...is there a reason that picture exists?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any rhyme or reason to the duckie? Because I'm imagining a movie kind of like Toy Story except with live-action actors' faces creepily pasted onto rubber duckies and other toys and/or bathroom paraphernalia and I would like to see it happen.

Yes, OP. Yes.

I'm fucking sick of every LotR, HP, or popular sitcom/drama actor being suggested for some role THEY DON'T EVEN FIT but the person suggesting them is fapping far too hard and loudly to notice.

(Yes, I know it's all a matter of opinion, but at least put some thought into choosing someone for a reason other than the fact that they're popular. Not saying the choice can't be a popular actor, but I'm tired of that apparently being the sole reason.)

I'm just here to be in love with that Beneduck Cumberhatchling.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I say let them have their fun. I think fancasting is fine as long as they don't throw a fit when the actors they picked aren't cast for the adaption.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. They can have their used: whenever I open a comments page on a book site, and instead of reviews a book's page is full with fancasting, often with gifs, I know the book's not worth the time or money to buy.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, OP, sometimes fan casting is better than the actual results we got. Just ask Italian fans about that utter disaster that was Dylan Dog.
Heck, you could ask me and I'm not even a fan of the original comic!

I'll forever stand by my fancasting of Jason Statham as Diabolik - but mostly I'll keep hoping Hollywood stays the Hell away from Italian comics. Considering the aforementioned Dylan Dog, it shouldn't be too difficult
