Re: blonde hair darkening

Well my sister was born with super blonde hair but now (age 25) has medium brown hair. It slowly darkened as she got older. And I know if she spends a lot of time out in the sun in the summer it does lighten up, but it more gets a reddish tone than any blonde.

I've heard that diet can have an effect on hair condition and sometimes even color/vibrance.

Yep. Half of one side of the extended family is like this. The good part is, you won't really look like you're going grey, even if you are, if one grandparent and one parent are anything to go by.

My brother had pale blond hair as a kid but it got progressively darker and by age 20 it was the same color as mine (dark brown).

I do think the sun has a bleaching effect. Last time I went for a trim, the stylist pointed out how the ends of my hair were noticeably lighter than the rest and asked if it was because of old highlights or the sun. I hadn't had highlights in something like 5 years, so it must have been the sun (my tips usually peek out from under hats so they're less protected, plus they are older so they've accumulated more damage.

I teach preschool and so many kids start with blonde hair that darkens up. (Two of our five blondes are more light brown than true blonde at this point.) And it happens more as you get older. Also, yes, sunlight bleaches hair. People used to put things like lemon juice in their hair to help bleach it even more. (Apparently people still dye their hair with lemon juice in the sun.)

For some yes. In my family, many of us were born blond, I was, so was my dad and his mother but as we aged our hair became darker and darker until we became medium brown haired. For some reason, this happens much more in people with Irish, Welsh, English and Scottish genes than say people from the Scandinavian or the Germanic countries. For those people, if they are born blond, they stay blond through out their lives.

All of my family is Scandinavian and I still have darkening of my formerly blonde hair. :/

Absolutely true. My brother and I both had really light hair when we were little an has gotten progressively darker before becoming a light brown.

Meanwhile my two cousins have almost white hair and my other cousins has a very light brown but I wouldn't call it blonde.

My hair lightens in the summer because I spend more time outside.

I know one year I spent a lot of time in the sun and I became a white-white blond. I wasn't born with that color and I'm not that color now. So yeah, sun can bleach your hair.

Often, yes. I started out being really blonde, but now my hair is light to medium brown. Sunlight can lighten hair, and as someone below mention, lemon juice can as well.

Absolutely, it's true. My Mom's a hairdresser and will testify to the sun and to children's hair darkening as they age.

Well one bro was born with uber white hair and it's definitely darkened as he aged. He's borderline brunet now. Meanwhile my other brother was born brunet and stayed so - but I was born with black hair that has steadily lightened as I age so now I'm light brunet to dark blond. So it's possible! My mother is a brunet who lightened to blond.

Oh and my hair bleaches every summer. It's why ends tend to be lighter than the base.

I was blonde as a child and am now brunette. So, in my experience, it's definitely true.

Yes and yes. I had lovely, practically platinum blonde hair when I was a child, and now in my thirties, my hair is more light brown than blonde. It sucks.

Re: blonde hair darkening

I had white-blonde hair as a kid, by puberty it was medium blonde, and in my early 30s I now have medium brown hair with blonde highlights, but it still gets lighter in the summer/when I spend a lot of time outside. My parents both had the same kind of hair; my mom now has dark brown hair streaked with blonde and grey. I think most people who stay blonde, especially platinum blonde, their whole lives are Scandinavian or have Scandinavian ancestry.

Yes. I had white-blonde hair as a child and now have really dark brown hair. When its my natural color it does get lighter in the sun, but I usually die it a really dark almost black color.

Yup. My SO was born cotton-white, and his hair is now a very dark dish-water blond.

And i don't have blonde hair - never did -but if i am in the sun alot, my dark-brown hair gets a lot of red and even some blondish highlights. The sun bleaches everything, including the dead keratin your hair is made of.

It's true for some people, but how dark it gets and when it starts seem to vary a lot. My sister was born blonde and had dark brown hair by preschool. I was born with light blonde hair and it turned more of a golden blonde somewhere around puberty but never got darker than that.
