I feel that way about Silmarillion fanart. Not because it's bad art, but because roughly 90% of the characters are black-haired, grey-eyed, tall, beautiful elves (so usually long hair for everyone, and nobody has a beard). Unless you have something to recognise them by (one dude braids gold ribbons into his hair, so you always know who he is) it's pretty much impossible to know who's who without an explanation.

I agree! I once saw a gorgeous piece of art where they even told me who was in the pic but there were like eight dark-haired characters so I still didn't know who was who. The Feanorians can be particularly difficult. Hell, the entire Noldor tree.

At least with the Fëanorions, if he's red-haired and missing a hand, you know who he is and won't mix him up with his two youngest brothers.
