It'd be really nice if more people were consistent about tagging in general, but I'm not holding my breath.

My God yes! I can not tell you how many times I have mistaken SNK characters for other people.

Oh, yes.

I enjoy both Destiel and Sterek art and lemme tell ya, Dean apparently looks a lot more like Stiles than I thought.

Okay but...why would you even care about generic, poorly-drawn, or unrecognizably stylized fanart?

Ugh, yes. The ongoing saga of, "Is it Bruce Banner or Carlos the Scientist" comes to mind.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This. I hate when I come across fanart for a show I love and I'm just staring at it wondering who they were supposed to be drawing. Usually it's with animated characters and the fanartist's style bears almost no resemblance to the actual character designs.

I had this problems where sometimes I couldn't tell in a Hetalia art whether it was Prussia, England, or even somebody else...

That's the reason I'm not really into fanart, or anime. I'm very bad with faces and it's even worse with this kind of style.

On an unrelated but related note, the generic can in the secret gave me flashbacks of being a child and going food shopping at the Commissary on base. Like this can, the generic food would be wrapped all in white packaging with black, plain texts. So you would have white bags with black lettering reading, "POTATO CHIPS" or "PRETZELS" and nothing else on the packaging save for the nutritional information on the back. You don't see this style of packaging any more. These days the generic stuff has just as nice packaging as the name brand stuff. But for a while, looking at the sort of packaging, there was something sci-fi about it. Very "They live."

Yeah, I also wish people would tag their stuff.

Especially when someone is sharing art that is not theres. Most people don't check the source so I often see people mixing up the characters or confusing them for someone else... it's frustrating.

I've seen Sherlock/Lestrade fanart reblogged as Sherlock/John. Height and hair colour should be a giveaway, but I guess people see what they expect to see.

What if I always tag and then tumblr decides it's somebody else (happens to faceless art before someone insults my skills) and it gets swallowed by juggernaut fandoms and gets mistagged one million time.
nightscale: Starbolt (Mass Effect: Fem!Shep)

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-02-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I don't like tagging the characters in shippy-art because I don't want to clog the character tags with a ship that not everyone will be cool with, so I just stick to the ship-name. Non-shippy art though I'll tag the characters properly.

Eh, I'll confess I'm kinda bad with tagging my fan art sometimes. But I primarily draw non-humans/aliens/anthro-esque characters (and crayola-colored-human OCs for my Old Republic stuff, lmao), so I sometimes tag and sometimes don't. The times I don't tag, is because I don't necessarily want something showing up in the tags on Tumblr for one reason or another. =T

But for human characters -especially ones from live action movies/TV shows-? Yeah, tags would def. help a lot.

Yeeeeessssssss. It's particularly hard when the canon of your fandom is not a visual medium. I have literally sat in from of art going, "This is gorgeous and beautiful but I have no fucking clue if it's xxxxxxx or --------."

Oh God yes. A particular pet peeve of mine is when someone draws live-action Western characters with very distinctive faces in a generic anime style. Sometimes the art in and of itself is very nice, but it looks ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like the actual characters, and there's times when I'm not even certain which fandom it's from.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about Silmarillion fanart. Not because it's bad art, but because roughly 90% of the characters are black-haired, grey-eyed, tall, beautiful elves (so usually long hair for everyone, and nobody has a beard). Unless you have something to recognise them by (one dude braids gold ribbons into his hair, so you always know who he is) it's pretty much impossible to know who's who without an explanation.
