I don't know the Irene one, but I don't think Heartbreak Hotel is really analogous to modern-day pop music. You could probably make the case that Elvis was more like a punk in his time period. (Granted, the man did "Teddy Bear," but some of his other stuff was pretty daring for the time, to say nothing of his dancing.)
