Yeah, its a generational thing. And your kids/neice/nephew will think their bland pop music is way better than yours.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Or sometimes, they'll think it's way worse. That happens a lot too - "Music was so much more authentic back in the day! Now it's all just mindless pop. I wish I was born in [whatever decade] when they were still making good music." Not sure if that's more or less dumb than the other way around.

Well if things keep going the way they're going, our kids will be listening to the same three notes and a drumbeat to the same breathy voice singing "baby baby baby oh baby baby".

Muskrat Love is one of the weirdest pop songs I've ever heard. I mean seriously, who thought that rodents doing it was a good theme for a sappy love ballad-type pop song? What makes the whole thing even stranger imo is that MORE THAN ONE VERSION OF THAT SONG EXISTS.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
There used to be a cover band called the Society for the Preservation of Dumb Songs. They said Muskrat Love was their most-requested song at live performances. (They also said the song that consistently got too much audience protesting for them to finish was In the Year 4545.)

Can we just admit that all pop music is bland and uninspired and people should listen to metal instead?

Here's a song. It's name is 'Death Throes of the Terror Squid' Enjoy.

Don't you feel better now that you've listened to that?

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Nope- Metal usually leaves me feeling worse.

But I'll agree most pop is bland.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
METAL IS TERRIBLE POP MUSIC IS GOD

It's not bland or uninspired. It's universal and it touches very basic emotional places but that's not that same as being bland or uninspired. Really great pop music is the best. It's absolutely fantastic. It's just the best.

OT but I have an African gray and when we sing this song, he barks on cue. It's adorable.
Also, Justin's music is the least offensive part of him.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
You handle the Jonas brothers, then. I'd actually rather listen to Patti Page.

"How Much is that Doggie in the Window" is slightly older than just a few decades though. We're talking over half a century. I was raised in the eighties and that song doesn't do anything for me either.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Let's do this, anon. You pick a year range in the 20th century that you think didn't have vapid, inexcusably stupid pop music, and we'll prove you wrong.

To kick it off, here's a little something that actually got airplay when I was in junior high:

I thought of making this secret around "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies, but I honestly don't hate that time period's music as much as I hate bad music from 10-20 years prior. (I don't hate all music from that time--I loved the vast majority of the music in the Fallout series, for instance--but the bad stuff really grates on me.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
...was "how much is that doggie in the window" actually a hit?

Man, I always thought it was just a novelty/kids song. I'm shocked and marginally horrified.

Wait 'til you find out what Chuck Berry's one and only #1 charting hit was.

I just used it as an example because I figured people might know it from Bioshock. Vapid as it is, I don't hate it nearly as much as, say, Betty-Lou Got a New Pair of Shoes. (On the other hand, I actually like Popsicles and Icicles.)

If you're wondering how the hell I hear all this, what I don't know from mainstream media comes from a radio station in my town that plays it all the time. I don't usually listen to it, but it always plays in the nearby Taco Bell, so I'm a captive audience while I wait for my burrito.

There's been some really awful stuff that has got to number one in the charts.

.

I don't know, sometimes the stories behind the songs are awfully interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Goodnight, Irene - the lyrics "sometimes I take a great notion to jump in the river and drown"

Heartbreak Hotel - inspired by a suicide

I said the same under that "golden age of anime" secret a few days ago, I'll say it again here: There is no golden age. Every generation of music has its gems and its massive piles of shit to wade through.

I call troll cause....I don't think that song was meant to be a "pop" hit. It's like a playground/children's song.

AND DON'T KNOCK THE LATE 60s/LATE 70s!!!
