I'm late, but I play hunter on a fairly low populated PVP server and I prefer that, it isn't like it is completely dead, but it isn't overrun either, which means less getting killed by the other side, but you are not alone.

I would join a guild as quickly as possible, usually someone asks you to join one when you start out, just accept them a guild is pretty much a guild, especially in the beginning. Being in a guild makes you level a bit quicker among other things.

Get at least one gathering profession, I prefer skinning as there is basically no effort in it.

Remember to actually level up first aid and cooking, because it will make life easier, in the same vein Fishing, because you can use the fish in cooking so.

Race wise if you pick hunter, being a dranei on the Alliance side ( or whichever race is the same on the Horde side) is pretty good in the low levels as you get a healing spell being a dranei, other than that the race perks are noted when you are choosing a player so you will find what you think fits you.

I am in Europe and as such on an European server, but I don't ever have any issues with meanness in the game. Except once in a while in battlegrounds, but that is more a general "why do all of you suck so much" and my favorite insult of all when everyone is lvl 90 "You are all a bunch of noobs", and some insults that aren't really that nice, but not the end of the world. Mostly I just ignore it. If it is anything aimed at you, you can easily just block that player and never hear from them again.
